Chapter 3: The Truth Behind the Ring
Chapter 3: The Truth Behind the Ring
Richard Bennett asked everyone except the immediate family to leave the ballroom.
The massive doors closed.
Only Emily, Victoria, Chloe, Richard, and the family attorney remained.
Richard unlocked an old wooden chest hidden inside the library wall.
From it he removed faded letters, hospital records, and dozens of photographs.
One picture showed a young Sarah Bennett laughing beside Victoria.
Another showed Sarah holding a newborn baby.
On the back, written in faded blue ink, were the words:
"Emily Grace Bennett."
Emily's knees nearly gave out.
"My last name..."
"...was Bennett?"
Richard nodded with tears in his eyes.
"Your father was my eldest son, Michael."
Emily stared at him.
"I've never heard that name."
"Because I erased him."
Richard's voice cracked.
Michael had fallen in love with Sarah despite the family's obsession with wealth and reputation. When Michael announced he would leave the company to build a simple life with her, Richard demanded he choose.
Michael chose Sarah.
The Bennett empire chose pride.
Weeks later Michael died in what police called a car accident.
Sarah believed someone had tampered with the brakes.
Before she could prove it, Richard's advisers threatened to take Emily away if Sarah ever challenged the family.
She fled.
She changed both their names.
She kept only one thing from her old life—
The silver ring.
Inside were the initials M.S.V.
Michael.
Sarah.
Victoria.
A promise the three siblings had made as children never to abandon one another.

Richard buried his face in his hands.
"I broke that promise."
