Chapter 15 - THE WOMAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO MARRY ME

Nora stared at her own photograph on the archive screen.

She was twenty-three in the image.

Her hair was longer.

She wore a college sweatshirt and carried a tray inside the Rusty Spoon.

Across the room, a younger version of me sat with two Navy friends during a training trip through Montana.

I remembered the visit.

I did not remember Nora.

The photograph had been taken through the diner window.

The directive explained that Nora was selected because of her father’s connection to NIGHTGLASS.

Samuel Reed had hidden evidence before his death.

Soren believed Nora might unknowingly possess it.

The plan was to arrange repeated contact between us.

I would gain access to the Reed family property.

The network would search for Samuel’s files.

The plan was abandoned.

Amelia entered my life instead.

“Who changed it?” I asked.

My mother’s recorded statement answered.

“I did.”

She had discovered the marriage assignment.

She refused to let Nora become another controlled life.

She redirected the network toward Amelia because Amelia had already been trained and knew the risks.

The choice saved Nora.

It condemned Amelia.

Amelia’s mother looked devastated.

“You knew?”

Evelyn shook her head.

“I knew your mother interfered.”

“I did not know how.”

Amelia laughed through tears.

“She protected a stranger by sacrificing me.”

I wanted to defend my mother.

I could not.

She may have believed Amelia had agency.

She may have believed Nora did not.

The distinction did not give her the right to choose.

Nora walked out of the station.

I followed.

Morning light spread across the fog.

She stood near the broken platform clock.

“So I was supposed to be your wife.”

“No.”

“That is what the file says.”

“The file says they selected you.”

“That is not the same as destiny.”

She looked at me.

“You sound certain.”

“I have spent two days learning that plans are not fate.”

Nora wrapped her arms around herself.

“My father died because of these people.”

“My life was arranged by them.”

“My diner was a listening station.”

“My friendship with Clyde was surveillance.”

“Now I find out my future husband was selected before I knew his name.”

“I was never your future husband.”

She nodded slowly.

“Thank you.”

“For what?”

“For not turning it into a romantic story.”

There was nothing romantic about control.

Back inside, the Mercer Foundation assumed temporary custody of the archive.

Aaron became legal trustee.

Eli became landowner trustee.

Coyle’s appointment was challenged immediately.

A federal judge in Helena agreed to replace him after an emergency hearing.

Coyle lost the only bargaining position he thought he possessed.

He began cooperating.

Senator Dane was arrested on charges including conspiracy, kidnapping, obstruction, theft of government property, and racketeering.

Admiral Soren faced military and civilian proceedings.

Colonel Shaw was detained for unauthorized operations and falsified orders.

My father surrendered for the killing of Harold Vance.

Dominic remained in custody.

He requested to speak with me.

We met inside the station office.

A federal marshal stood outside.

Dominic’s wrists were secured to the table.

He looked at my clean shirt.

“Finally changed out of the milkshake.”

“Nora found an old shirt in the supply room.”

“She always takes care of people.”

“You noticed.”

“I noticed everything in that diner.”

“Including my wife.”

His eyes held mine.

“Yes.”

“Did she love you?”

“No.”

“Did you love her?”

Dominic considered the question.

“I loved that she looked at me like I could still choose differently.”

“Could you?”

“Once.”

“When?”

“The first time she showed me evidence against my father.”

“What did you do?”

“I burned it.”

There was the answer.

Amelia had tried to change him.

He had chosen the badge.

“Why humiliate me?”

“Soren ordered pressure.”

“The milkshake was your idea.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Dominic looked toward the old station window.

“Because you walked through town like my authority did not exist.”

“I repaired trucks.”

“You did not lower your eyes.”

“That bothered you?”

“It terrified me.”

Dominic had built his identity from submission.

A quiet man who did not submit became a threat.

“I wanted Amelia to see you do nothing,” he said.

“You wanted her to believe you were stronger.”

“I wanted myself to believe it.”

“And now?”

“Now I know you could have put me on the floor.”

“Yes.”

“Why did you not?”

“Because that would have given you the story you wanted.”

Dominic leaned back.

“You waited for the perfect moment to strike.”

“No.”

“I waited for you to make your actions undeniable.”

He almost smiled.

“That is worse.”

“Yes.”

He gave me information about Ron Vick.

Vick maintained a final escape property near the Canadian border.

He also held copies of Amelia’s forged insurance documents and recordings of her work with Dominic.

Those recordings could prove coercion.

Or conspiracy.

Dominic did not know which.

“Why help her?” I asked.

“I am not.”

“Then why tell me?”

“Because Vick has something else.”

“What?”

“A list of every child NIGHTGLASS used as leverage.”

Ellie Morgan was not the only one.

Dozens of families had been threatened.

Some children were moved through false custody orders.

Some were placed with officials connected to the network.

One name on the list mattered to Dominic.

He had a daughter.

She was fourteen.

No public record connected them.

Her mother had disappeared after threatening to expose him.

“Where is she?”

“Vick knows.”

“Name?”

“Grace.”

Dominic’s voice cracked for the first time.

“I became my father because I thought power would protect her.”

“Did it?”

“No.”

“It gave them another way to control me.”

He gave me the location of Vick’s property.

Walsh organized a warrant team.

I did not plan to join.

My authority had transferred.

My role was over.

Then Amelia entered the office under guard.

She placed an audio recorder on the table.

“I found this in my mother’s belongings.”

Evelyn had carried it on the train.

The recording captured a recent conversation between Vick and Senator Dane.

They discussed moving Grace across the border.

They also discussed another child.

A boy identified only as Subject H-2.

The boy’s medical records matched mine.

His DNA showed a direct paternal connection.

I looked toward my father.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Subject H-2 was his son.

My half brother.

May you like

He was twelve years old.

And he was being held at Vick’s property with Dominic’s daughter.
