Chapter 1: The Test Was Never About the Handbag

No one moved.
Jimena stood frozen behind the counter, her face drained of color.
Customers who had been quietly browsing moments earlier now watched in complete silence.
Luis slowly closed the old archive folder.
"Mrs. Velasco..." he said softly.
"I had no idea you were coming."
Carmen smiled.
"That was the point."
She looked around the boutique.
"The displays are beautiful."
"The leather is finer than ever."
"The lighting is perfect."
"But something far more valuable has disappeared."
She turned toward Jimena.
"When I founded this company..."
"I taught every employee that a handbag is never sold."
"It is entrusted."
Jimena lowered her head.
"I... I'm sorry."
Carmen gently shook hers.
"No."
"You're sorry because you were discovered."
"Not because you judged someone by her appearance."
The words struck harder than any shout.
Several employees quietly looked away.
One young sales associate stepped forward, tears filling her eyes.
"Mrs. Velasco..."
"I wanted to help you."
"But I was afraid of speaking against my supervisor."
Carmen gave her a kind smile.
"Fear destroys a company much faster than failure."
Luis closed his eyes.
He already knew what had to happen.
That afternoon, Jimena's employment was terminated.
But Carmen wasn't finished.
