CHAPTER 3: THE EMPIRE BEGINS TO COLLAPSE

Daniel finally stepped forward.
"Maya..."
His voice shook.
"I... I'm sorry."
She looked at him quietly.
"Sorry for what?"
He couldn't answer.
Sorry for staying silent?
Sorry for letting his mother slap her?
Sorry for treating her like she was beneath him?
None of the words seemed enough.
Colonel Vance answered instead.
"Silence in the face of cruelty is another form of betrayal."
Daniel lowered his head.
Across the ballroom, Victoria forced herself to laugh.
"This changes nothing."
"A forgotten family name doesn't make her worthy of the Sterling legacy."
Colonel Vance slowly smiled.
"It changes everything."
He nodded toward the entrance.
The doors opened.
Several government officials entered.
Behind them came attorneys carrying sealed folders.
One of them spoke clearly.
"Mrs. Victoria Sterling..."
"Your company has been under investigation for eighteen months."
The room erupted.
"What?"
"The Hale Foundation owned thirty-eight percent of Sterling Defense Holdings."
"Those shares were placed in trust for the missing child."
He turned toward Maya.
"The trust automatically returns to the rightful heir upon verified identification."
Another lawyer handed Maya a thick leather folder.
"You now control the largest voting interest in the company."
Victoria's face turned white.
"No..."
"That's impossible."
"It belongs to me!"
"It never did," the attorney replied calmly.
"You merely managed assets that were never yours."
Daniel stared at the documents.
His mother no longer controlled the empire.
His wife did.
Board members who had ignored Maya only moments earlier immediately stood.
Several walked toward her.
One after another...
They bowed.
Victoria's hands trembled violently.
Everything she had spent decades building had disappeared in a single night.
Not because someone stole it.
Because it had never belonged to her.
