CHAPTER 1 — THE HOUSE WAS ALREADY SURROUNDED

The front door opened before Vanessa could move.

Four officers entered the mansion in silence, followed by Detective Gabriel Ruiz, a tall man in a charcoal coat with a body camera clipped to his chest.

The elderly caretaker, Margaret, stared at them in confusion.

“What is the meaning of this?” she demanded.

Vanessa slowly pulled away from her arms.

Her tears stopped almost instantly.

Detective Ruiz looked past both women and saw Elena lying on the wooden landing, one hand resting protectively over her belly.

“Medical team,” he ordered.

Two paramedics hurried forward.

Vanessa’s face drained of color.

“She’s pretending,” she said quickly. “She attacked me first. Margaret saw everything.”

Margaret nodded uncertainly.

“I saw Elena fall,” she said. “Vanessa was crying. She said—”

“You saw what happened afterward,” Elena interrupted calmly. “Not what happened before.”

Vanessa pointed at her.

“Listen to her! She planned this!”

Elena’s eyes met hers.

“Yes,” she said. “I did.”

The room fell silent.

Even Detective Ruiz looked toward her.

Elena allowed the paramedics to help her sit upright. Her breathing was controlled, but one hand never left her stomach.

“For six months,” she said, “someone has been replacing my medication, deleting security footage, and telling my husband that I was becoming unstable.”

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

“That’s ridiculous.”

Elena continued as though she had not spoken.

“Three weeks ago, I found a hidden message on my husband’s office computer. Someone had been transferring money from his private accounts into a company registered under a false name.”

Detective Ruiz removed a sealed folder from inside his coat.

“The company belongs to Vanessa Hale,” he said.

Margaret looked at Vanessa.

“You told me Elena was stealing from the family.”

Vanessa’s eyes flashed.

“She is! She manipulated Daniel into changing his will!”

Elena’s expression remained calm.

“That’s why you needed me gone before the baby was born.”

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

It was not the broken laugh of an innocent woman.

It was cold and bitter.

“You think one little fall proves anything?”

“No,” Elena replied. “But your confession might.”

Vanessa froze.

Elena pointed toward the carved wooden railing above them.

Hidden inside the decorative molding was a small camera.

Then she pointed toward the chandelier.

A second device blinked behind the glass.

Finally, she held up her phone.

“The entire house has been recording since yesterday.”

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

She had believed she had pushed Elena into a trap.

Instead, every step she had taken had been documented.

Detective Ruiz moved toward her.

“Vanessa Hale, do not leave this room.”

But Vanessa was no longer looking at him.

She was staring at the hallway behind Elena.

A man had just appeared there.

Elena’s husband, Daniel, stood motionless beneath the chandelier.

And from the look on his face, he had heard everything.
