Chapter 2 – The Man They Buried Walked Through the Door
The ballroom fell into absolute silence.
No one breathed.
No one moved.
Damien Rowe stepped through the shattered entrance with the calm confidence of a man who feared nothing on earth. His charcoal overcoat rested perfectly across his shoulders despite the rain outside. Behind him, more than twenty armed security men spread through the ballroom with military precision, quietly closing every exit.
Guests instinctively lowered their phones.
Parents who ruled investment firms, law offices, and billion-dollar corporations suddenly looked like frightened schoolchildren.
Damien ignored them all.
His eyes found only one person.
"Maren."
His voice was barely a whisper.
Yet it carried through the entire hall.
Lying on the cold marble floor, Maren slowly lifted her tear-filled eyes.
For several seconds neither of them spoke.
She stared at the man she had mourned for seven months.
"You..."
Her lips trembled.
"I thought you were dead."
Damien crossed the room in long, controlled steps before dropping to one knee beside her.
His expensive suit pressed against the marble without hesitation.
He gently touched her cheek.
"I'm sorry."
His voice cracked for the first time.
"I searched every city... every state... every airport... every hospital."
His hand slowly moved to her swollen stomach.
His fingers froze.
He looked back into her eyes.
"Our baby?"
A single tear rolled down Maren's face.
"Yes."
Damien closed his eyes.
For one brief moment, the feared crime boss disappeared.
Only a father remained.
Then he noticed the blood staining the marble beneath her.
Everything changed.
His face became emotionless.
He slowly stood.
"Who did this?"
No one answered.
The silence became unbearable.
Finally, Chloe Ashford forced a laugh.
"It was just an accident."
Damien turned toward her.
The temperature in the room seemed to drop.
"You pushed her?"
"I... I didn't—"
Before she could finish, Damien's bodyguard placed Chloe's own phone into his hand.
"We recovered the livestream before she deleted it."
The screen played clearly.
Every insult.
Every threat.
Every laugh.
Every second of Maren's humiliation.
Including Chloe's hand ripping the trash bag away.
Including Maren falling.
The recording ended.
Damien looked toward Headmaster Ellison.
"You watched this happen."
Ellison's knees nearly gave out.
"I... I was trying to protect the school's reputation."
Damien answered without emotion.
"No."
"You protected wealthy donors."
He looked toward one of his men.
"Call the ambulance."
Another bodyguard immediately knelt beside Maren.

A third quietly locked every ballroom door.
No one was leaving.
