Chapter 1: The Truth on the Screen

The ballroom stood frozen.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
The surveillance footage continued playing on the giant screen above the stage.
There was Vivian.
Clear as day.
She glanced around to make sure nobody was watching.
Then she reached into her purse.
A small white packet appeared in her hand.
Seconds later, she emptied its contents into Emma's wine glass.
Gasps echoed throughout the room.
Emma's father stared at the screen in disbelief.
"Vivian..."
His voice cracked.
Vivian immediately shook her head.
"No. This isn't what it looks like."
But nobody believed her.
The security chief zoomed in on the footage.
The packet's label became visible.
The room collectively inhaled.
The substance contained ingredients that could trigger a severe reaction when mixed with Emma's medication.
Emma slowly lowered herself into a chair.
Tears filled her eyes.
Not because she was afraid.
Because she finally understood.
Her illness had not mysteriously worsened over the last few months.
Someone had been helping it happen.
Someone living inside her own home.
Then another voice suddenly spoke from the back of the ballroom.
"I think everyone deserves to know the whole truth."
A woman stepped forward.
Vivian's personal assistant.
And she was carrying a thick folder.
