Chapter 6: The Injunction at the Altar

The magistrate judge, a tired-looking man named Judge Harrison who clearly wished he were still in bed, cleared his throat and thumbed through the leather-bound documents resting on the polished mahogany table in the east parlor.
Sunlight streamed through the tall windows, illuminating the exact spot where, less than twenty-four hours earlier, Victoria Haynes had shoved a three-year-old child onto the marble floor.

Now, the dark coffee stain had been meticulously scrubbed away, leaving only the pristine, pale stone.
"Do you, Ethan James Caldwell, take this woman, Rosa Martinez, to be your lawful wedded wife?" Judge Harrison asked, his voice echoing slightly in the cavernous room.
"I do," Ethan said. His voice was steady, his gaze locked entirely on Rosa, ignoring the faint, muffled thuds coming from the heavy front doors downstairs where process servers were currently attempting to serve legal papers.
"And do you, Rosa Martinez, take this man..."
Before the judge could finish, the double doors of the parlor burst open with a resounding crash.
Marcus Vance sprang up from his chair, shouting, "You cannot enter this room! This is a private residence under active seal!"
Striding into the parlor was Arthur Haynes, his face twisted in corporate fury, followed closely by two private bailiffs carrying a stack of federal injunction documents. Behind them stood Victoria, her eyes red-rimmed from crying, wearing a bitter, triumphant smile.
"Stop right there!" Arthur barked, waving a sheaf of papers in the air. "Ethan, you arrogant bastard, you are committing fraud under active litigation! This marriage is an obvious sham designed to circumvent asset freezing and custody statutes! Judge Harrison, I motion for an immediate halt to these proceedings under federal code section—"
"Mr. Haynes," Judge Harrison interrupted, not even looking up from his papers. He adjusted his half-moon spectacles and looked squarely at the furious developer. "You are currently trespassing in a private residence during a legally sealed civil ceremony authorized by the State Superior Court."
"It's a fraudulent sham!" Victoria shrieked, stepping forward. "He's marrying his maid! She trapped him with a brat to get her hands on his fortune! Look at her—she doesn't belong here!"
Ethan didn't shout. He didn't lose his temper.
With agonizing slowness, he turned from the altar, slipped the platinum and diamond ring onto Rosa’s finger, and then turned to face Arthur and Victoria Haynes.
"Marcus," Ethan said calmly.
"Right here, Ethan," the lawyer replied, stepping forward with a malicious grin and opening his own leather folder.
"Please read the guests the press release we just distributed to every major financial publication on Wall Street, effective five seconds ago."
Arthur frowned. "What press release?"
Marcus cleared his throat and read aloud:
"Effective immediately, Caldwell Corporation is terminating all real estate and development partnerships with Haynes Enterprises, citing gross financial mismanagement, contractual breaches, and ethical violations discovered during internal audits over the past seventy-two hours. Furthermore, Caldwell Corp is calling in all outstanding debt notes held by Haynes Enterprises, totaling four hundred and fifty million dollars, payable in full by midnight tonight."
The color drained entirely from Arthur Haynes' face. He staggered back a step, nearly colliding with one of his own lawyers.
"You... you can't do that," Arthur whispered, his voice trembling. "That will bankrupt us. That will destroy our entire portfolio overnight."
"You declared war, Arthur," Ethan said, his voice as cold and hard as the marble beneath their feet. "You just didn't realize you were fighting a man who already owned your ammunition."
Victoria stared at Ethan in horror, finally realizing the full, terrifying scope of the man she had tried to manipulate.
Ethan turned back to Judge Harrison. "Shall we continue, Judge?"
Judge Harrison cleared his throat, hiding a very small smile. "Yes. Now... do you, Rosa Martinez, take this man to be your lawful wedded wife?"

Rosa looked at Ethan—at the man who had just destroyed a multi-billion-dollar empire without blinking an eye, all to protect her and their daughter. She raised her chin, her eyes shining with fierce, unyielding pride.
"I do," she said.
