CHAPTER 2: The Mistake They Didn't See

Derek mistook Megan's smile for surrender.
Howard would make the same mistake.
Neither of them understood what had actually happened.
Standing on the porch with Leo asleep against her shoulder, Megan opened the transfer details again.
Whitmore Regional Distribution.
The company name stared back at her.
Her company.
Not Howard's.
Years earlier, Howard had convinced Derek to invest in a small logistics operation. The business had struggled until Megan stepped in. She built new client relationships, redesigned shipping routes, and negotiated contracts that doubled revenue.
But Howard always insisted everything stay under his control.
Including the company bank accounts.
What Howard didn't know was that Megan had quietly become far more important than he ever realized.
Three months earlier, Whitmore Regional Distribution had signed a multimillion-dollar contract with a national retail chain.
And only one person held authorization to manage that contract.
Megan.
She looked at her mother.
"Can you watch Leo tonight?"
Joanne frowned.
"What are you planning?"
Megan's eyes hardened.
"I'm taking back everything they think they own."
The next morning, Howard arrived at his office feeling victorious.
By noon, his confidence vanished.
The retail chain terminated its contract.
Three major clients followed.
Every one of them had received the same email.
Megan Carter had resigned.
Without her certifications and management authority, compliance requirements could no longer be met.
Howard spent the afternoon screaming into phones.
By evening, his company stockholders were demanding answers.
For the first time in years, people were no longer afraid of Howard Whitmore.
They were angry.
And angry investors were far more dangerous.
Meanwhile, Megan sat quietly at her mother's kitchen table feeding applesauce to Leo.
Her phone never stopped ringing.
She ignored every call.
May you like
Especially Derek's.
Because for the first time in five years, she was finally done protecting him.
