Chapter 14 - ELEVEN MILLION IN ESCROW

Eleven million dollars did not appear from nowhere.

Ellen arranged an independent tracing review and warned me not to assume the balance remained unchanged.

The account number matched a dormant escrow administered by a bank that had merged twice since Thomas opened it.

The funds originated from an aborted property transaction involving an early Price Meridian affiliate.

Thomas had apparently negotiated the return of investment capital after discovering inconsistent disclosures.

He placed the money in escrow while legal claims were resolved.

The money did not belong to Graham.

Nor was it a gift to Adam.

It was disputed property that could be disbursed only after documented approvals.

When Graham learned the notebook had been found, his attorney called Ellen and demanded that we stop examining it.

Ellen asked for the legal basis.

There was none offered.

That evening, I received a voicemail from Celeste.

"Margaret, I'm leaving Graham," she said.

"He tells people I am incapable of understanding our finances, but I understand enough to know he has lied to all of us."

I called her back and encouraged her to obtain independent legal advice.

I did not offer to finance her divorce or manage her decisions.

The line between compassion and control had become very clear to me.

Adam, meanwhile, agreed to surrender copies of the forged correspondence and provide an accurate chronology.

He also admitted something I had not known.

For months he had asked my office for payments disguised as short-term loans to support his lifestyle.

When Helen denied them, he began forwarding her emails to Vanessa and Graham.

The fragments contained signatures, logos and information later used in the false documents.

"You gave them the pieces," I told him.

"I didn't realize what they would build."

"But you knew you were taking what wasn't yours."

He bowed his head.

It was the first time he accepted that sentence without defending himself.

The bank released a statement confirming that the questioned guarantee was suspended and under review.

No determination of criminal responsibility had yet been made.

Then another message arrived from Richard Vale.

This time it came directly to my lawyer.

He offered to return the original guarantee if I would withdraw all allegations against Adam.

Attached was a scanned page bearing Thomas's signature and a handwritten note:
