Chapter 5: The Little Boy Who Finally Ran Home

Six months later the Grant mansion no longer felt like a museum.

Emily's photographs returned to every hallway.

Noah proudly pointed at them.

"That's my mommy."

Alexander answered every question now.

He no longer erased Emily from their lives.

He spoke about her every day.

Together, father and son planted a maple tree in the garden in her memory.

Claire stood nearby but never stepped into moments that belonged to them.

She simply made sure they happened.

One afternoon Alexander arrived home earlier than usual.

Noah looked through the front window.

For the first time since Emily's death...

He dropped everything.

"Daddy!"

The little boy sprinted across the foyer, laughing as he threw himself into Alexander's arms.

Alexander lifted him effortlessly, holding him tighter than he ever had before.

"I missed you," Noah whispered.

"I missed you too, buddy."

Alexander looked over Noah's shoulder.

Claire was quietly gathering toys to give them privacy.

"Claire."

She turned.

"Thank you."

She smiled gently.

"You did the hard part."

"No."

Alexander shook his head.

"You reminded me how."

Months later Alexander permanently removed every hidden camera from the family's living spaces.

Trust could not grow beneath constant surveillance.

As the final camera came down, Noah tugged on his father's sleeve.

"Is the house fixed now?"

Alexander looked around the home that finally sounded alive again.

Children's laughter echoed through the halls.

Emily's photographs smiled from the walls.

Claire and Mrs. Rivera prepared cookies together in the kitchen.

He knelt beside his son and smiled.

"Yes."

"It's finally home again."
