Chapter 2: The Woman Everyone Had Ignored

By sunrise, every television station in America carried the same headline.

UNKNOWN CATERER SAVES BILLIONAIRE'S SON FROM INFERNO.

The video spread across social media within hours.

Guests who had stood frozen outside were now seen recording the fire while one woman disappeared into the flames.

People wanted to know her name.

Marisol didn't answer interviews.

She was sitting beside Sofia's hospital bed after doctors treated her for smoke inhalation.

Sofia gently touched the bandage wrapped around her mother's burned hand.

"You saved him?"

Marisol smiled weakly.

"I just did what any mother would do."

The little girl shook her head.

"No."

"You did what a hero would do."

That afternoon, someone knocked on the apartment door.

Marisol opened it.

Standing outside was Preston Blackwood.

Not in a tuxedo.

Not surrounded by bodyguards.

Just a father holding his son's green dinosaur.

Elliot stepped forward first.

Without saying a word...

He hugged her.

"I was scared," he whispered.

Marisol hugged him back.

"So was I."

Preston's eyes filled with gratitude.

"I've spent my whole life believing money could solve every problem."

"Last night proved I was wrong."

"You gave my son his future."

He handed her a folder.

Inside was a check large enough to erase every debt she had ever carried.

Marisol slowly closed it.

"I can't accept this."

Preston looked stunned.

"You saved my child's life."

"I didn't do it for money."

She gently pushed the folder back toward him.

"I did it because someone needed his mother."

The billionaire stood speechless.

No boardroom...

No negotiation...

Had ever humbled him like that moment.
