Chapter 19 - THE NIGHT THE PERFECT HOUSE BURNED

Raymond Pike raised his gun toward Maria.

"Move away from the door."

Maria remained still.

Behind her, Daniel and Lily repeated the last verse.

The words sounded simple enough to be meaningless.

That was Daniel's design.

"The lost bird flies when no bell rings."

"Grace comes home on broken wings."

"Name the child the father sold."

"Then turn the lie from white to gold."

Pike listened with desperate concentration.

He did not notice Maria's hand moving toward the wall alarm.

"Again," he ordered.

Daniel stopped singing.

"You heard it."

"I need the exact phrase."

"That was the phrase."

Pike stepped closer.

"Open the door, or your wife dies."

Daniel answered from inside.

"Howard said the same thing fourteen months ago."

"It worked then."

"Not tonight."

Maria struck the alarm.

Metal fire doors dropped across both ends of the corridor.

Pike fired.

The bullet grazed Maria's side and struck the wall.

She fell behind a nurses' station.

Hospital officers emerged from a service room where Detective Monroe had placed them after the breach alert.

Pike turned and fired twice.

An officer struck his arm with a ballistic shield.

The gun slid across the floor.

Maria kicked it beneath a medication cart.

Pike was forced down and handcuffed.

He shouted that he had judicial immunity.

No one listened.

Daniel pushed the supply-room door open and crawled toward Maria.

"You are bleeding."

"It is a scratch."

"That is what people say before stitches."

Lily knelt beside her.

"Was that a bad sacrifice idea?"

Maria pressed a hand to her side.

"Maybe a little."

"A lot."

Despite the pain, Maria laughed.

Police took Pike away.

Detective Monroe called Maria from the mansion perimeter and ordered the hospital placed under federal protection.

Maria told her the exact final verse and warned that Howard still needed the brass token.

The detective checked the evidence inventory.

The token was missing from the police vault.

Samuel Price had listed it among sealed juvenile records during the stolen evidence transfer.

Howard might already possess it.

Daniel shook his head.

"The disk is not sufficient by itself."

"William added a pressure sequence."

"Three short turns, one long turn, then the engraved side faces east."

Lily had learned the motion while playing with the hidden button as a toddler.

Howard could possess the object and still fail because he had ignored the child who understood it.

His phone contained a live connection to Howard's burner network.

The final verse had been transmitted.

Howard now possessed both halves of the reserve account phrase.

At the mansion, Nathan carried Eleanor through the foyer while medics moved Claire on a stretcher.

The gas odor reached them near the staircase.

Thomas shouted that the main valve had been opened below the greenhouse.

Police ordered immediate evacuation.

Mrs. Donnelly and the staff were led outside.

Eleanor refused to leave without Nathan.

"Howard is in the tunnel."

"Then police will find him."

"He knows a second exit."

Nathan remembered the original property plans.

The tunnel split beneath the rose garden.

One branch led to the garage.

The other reached William's private study through a hidden lift.

Howard was not trying to escape the grounds.

He was trying to access the old financial terminal inside William's study.

The terminal had been disconnected for years, but a private fiber line still connected it to the Grace Fund reserve server.

With the lullaby phrase, Howard could move two hundred million dollars before destroying the mansion.

"Get my mother out," Nathan told Thomas.

Eleanor grabbed his coat.

"Do not follow him alone."

"I am not alone."

Nathan looked toward Detective Monroe and four tactical officers entering the foyer.

They descended through the hidden door behind the fireplace.

Gas thickened the tunnel air.

Firefighters cut the external supply, but pressure remained in the underground lines.

One spark could ignite the entire east wing.

Howard reached William's study through the lift and entered the account phrase.

The old terminal displayed the Grace Fund balance.

Two hundred fourteen million dollars.

He initiated transfers to twelve offshore accounts.

The system requested a physical token.

William had removed it from the safe years earlier.

Howard cursed and searched the desk.

Claire had assumed the brass disk in Lily's jacket was only a key.

It was also the token.

Police possessed it.

The transfer could not complete.

Howard opened a drawer and removed a second gun.

Nathan entered the study through the main door.

"It is over."

Howard turned.

"You people keep saying that."

"The accounts are frozen."

"Money is never frozen."

"Only delayed."

"You lost the token."

"Then Lily has something that belongs to me."

"Nothing about Lily belongs to you."

Howard's face twisted.

"She carries my blood."

"Blood is not ownership."

"Tell that to every Whitmore trust document."

Nathan stepped closer.

"I am changing them."

"You will destroy the company with guilt."

"Then it deserves to be rebuilt."

Howard raised the gun.

Detective Monroe ordered him to drop it from the corridor.

He fired at Nathan.

Nathan dove behind the desk.

The bullet struck a lamp.

Sparks fell onto the carpet.

A blue flame appeared where gas had entered through the floor vent.

Fire raced along the baseboard.

Howard laughed.

"Now the ending has a body."

He ran toward the hidden lift.

Nathan followed through smoke.

The lift descended into the tunnel but stopped halfway when fire damaged the power line.

Howard forced open the doors and climbed down.

Nathan entered after him.

They emerged beneath the greenhouse where orange light spread through the glass structure.

Plants burned in rows.

The fountain beside which Lily had been tied cracked from heat.

Howard ran toward the exterior door.

Maria's voice came through Nathan's phone.

"Do not let him reach the north wall."

She had received the property map from Daniel.

"There is an old drainage gate connected to the highway culvert."

Nathan relayed the warning.

Police moved outside to block it.

Howard heard the radio and changed direction.

He climbed the greenhouse stairs toward the glass roof.

Nathan followed.

"Howard, stop."

"Your father begged me once."

Howard reached the narrow roof walkway.

Rain struck the burning glass and filled the air with steam.

"He begged me to take Grace because he feared being poor."

"Then he spent his life pretending I forced him."

"He made his choice," Nathan said.

"So did you."

"I gave him an empire."

"You gave him a cage and charged interest."

Howard fired again.

The bullet shattered a roof panel.

He stepped backward onto fractured glass.

The pane broke beneath him.

Howard fell through and caught the steel frame with one hand.

His gun dropped into the flames below.

Nathan reached the edge.

Howard hung above the burning fountain.

"Help me."

The plea was small and human.

Nathan thought of William.

Rose.

Daniel.

Eleanor drugged in her room.

Lily tied to a chair.

He reached down.

"Take my hand."

Howard stared at it.

For one second, he seemed shocked that mercy remained possible.

Then he pulled a narrow blade from his sleeve and slashed at Nathan's wrist.

Nathan jerked back.

Howard lost his grip.

He fell onto the shallow stone edge of the fountain.

Firefighters reached him within seconds.

He survived with broken bones and severe burns.

He would face the truth alive.

Police dragged Nathan from the greenhouse as the roof collapsed.

The mansion's east wing burned, but the dining room and main structure survived.

Claire watched the fire from inside the ambulance.

A medic asked Claire why she attacked Howard at the table.

She looked through the open ambulance doors at Eleanor, Nathan, and the staff helping one another across the lawn.

"Because he was going to kill me," she said first.

Then, after a long silence, she added another truth.

"And because the old woman would not stop looking at me like I still had a choice."

The medic did not call that redemption.

Neither did Claire.

It was simply the first decision she made that did not increase the number of helpless people in the room.

Julian lay in another ambulance under guard.

When he saw her, he began shouting that she caused everything.

Claire turned her face away.

Samuel Price was arrested at the airport with forged passports and the stolen black case.

He had planned to flee while Howard destroyed the evidence.

The original adoption ledgers were recovered from his luggage.

At the hospital, Maria received six stitches.

Daniel sat beside her holding Lily.

Eleanor arrived with Nathan after being cleared by medics.

They watched live news footage of Howard Bell placed into an ambulance in handcuffs.

No one celebrated.

Too much had been lost for celebration.

Then Detective Monroe entered carrying an evidence tablet.

The Grace Fund transfer logs showed one completed transaction before the account froze.

Ten million dollars had moved to a trust created that morning.

The beneficiary was Lily Parker.

Maria stared at the screen.

"Howard sent her money?"

"No," the detective said.

"The authorization came from Claire's detention credentials."

Claire had used Howard's network to move stolen funds into Lily's name.

May you like

It could make Lily look like part of the conspiracy.

Even from an ambulance, Claire had left one final trap.
