Chapter 1: The Night Everyone Lied

The housemaid's whisper echoed through the ballroom.

"The little girl didn't disappear... she was taken."

No one breathed.

The Patriarch gripped his cane so tightly his knuckles turned white.

"What are you saying?" he asked.

The old woman slowly looked around the room.

"For thirty years, everyone believed I stole these jewels and ran away."

She rested her hand on the velvet case.

"I let them believe it."

Gasps rippled through the guests.

The elegant female heir stepped closer.

"Why?"

The housemaid closed her eyes.

"Because if they believed I was the thief... they would stop looking for the child."

Silence.

Then she pointed toward the faded family portrait hanging above the grand staircase.

"I was cleaning the nursery that night."

"I heard someone arguing."

"A woman screaming."

"A baby crying."

"I hid inside the linen closet."

Her voice trembled for the first time.

"I watched your mistress hand the child to a man wearing the family's crest."

The Patriarch staggered backward.

"No..."

"I saw everything."

"The jewels were never stolen."

"She placed them inside my bag before I escaped."

"So everyone would chase the servant..."

"...instead of the kidnappers."

The room erupted into stunned whispers.

Then the Patriarch spoke only one sentence.

"My wife..."

"...planned our daughter's disappearance."
