Chapter 8 - The Wrong Man

Gabriel read the sentence on the burned letter three times.

No one interrupted him.

The blue room seemed to shrink around the silence.

Finally, he looked at his mother.

"How did Dad die?"

Beatrice stared at him.

The question was so simple that it seemed to hurt her.

She signed.

You know how they said he died.

Gabriel nodded.

"Car accident."

Beatrice continued.

Wet road.

Mountain turn.

Brake failure.

Gabriel's face tightened.

"The police said mechanical failure."

Yes.

Then she signed another word.

Made.

Chloe translated.

"She says the brake failure was made to happen."

Gabriel's expression went cold.

"By Luca?"

Beatrice nodded.

Rocco took a step forward.

"You saw him?"

Beatrice looked at him.

Night before.

Garage.

He was under the car.

I asked what he was doing.

He said Anthony had heard a noise.

Chloe translated each line.

Gabriel looked toward the slashed portrait of his father.

"And the next day he crashed."

Beatrice nodded.

Gabriel's voice became barely audible.

"Why didn't anyone investigate Luca?"

Beatrice's hands moved again.

Because Vincent translated for me.

Gabriel turned so sharply that the burned letter tore slightly in his hand.

"Vincent?"

Beatrice nodded.

The day after the crash, a detective came.

You were at the hospital with Anthony.

I tried to explain what I saw.

Vincent told the detective I had seen Luca changing a tire weeks earlier.

I did not say that.

I hit him.

The detective thought I was hysterical.

Chloe stopped translating for a second.

Her throat felt tight.

Gabriel looked at her.

"Keep going."

She did.

"She says Vincent deliberately changed what she said."

Beatrice continued.

After that, Luca told everyone I was not coping with grief.

They sent a specialist.

They took my car keys.

They moved my papers.

They smiled at me while they decided my hands meant nothing.

Chloe's anger rose with every sentence.

Gabriel looked ill.

"I signed the medical paperwork."

Beatrice stared at him.

Yes.

Gabriel sat down.

For once, no one looked away from his shame.

Chloe watched him process it.

He had not merely failed to learn a language.

He had helped build the cage around his mother because other people told him the cage was care.

Rocco broke the silence.

"If Luca killed Anthony, he needed a reason."

Gabriel looked up.

"The ledger."

Rocco nodded.

"Anthony knew Luca and Vincent were skimming from Valenti routes."

Matteo leaned against the desk, still pale from the wound in his arm.

"Maybe he planned to cut them out."

Beatrice shook her head.

She signed.

Not just money.

Chloe translated.

"What else?" Gabriel asked.

Beatrice looked at the blue room door.

Then she crossed to a bookcase.

She pulled out a thick family Bible.

A rectangle had been cut into the pages.

The hollow space inside was empty.

Gabriel frowned.

"What was there?"

A photograph.

"Of what?"

Beatrice signed one name.

Luca.

Then another.

Valenti.

Then a third.

Federal agent.

Rocco swore.

Chloe looked at him.

"Explain."

Rocco did.

"If Anthony had proof Luca was meeting a federal agent without Gabriel's father authorizing it, Luca looked like an informant."

Gabriel shook his head.

"Luca hated federal investigators."

"That doesn't mean he hated deals."

"What kind of deal?"

Rocco's eyes narrowed.

"One where he feeds them smaller people and protects himself."

Beatrice signed.

Anthony found out.

He confronted Luca in this room.

I saw them.

I could not hear the words.

But I saw Anthony point at the photograph.

I saw Luca beg.

The next morning, Anthony's brakes failed.

Gabriel stood again.

"Where is the photograph now?"

Beatrice's face hardened.

Gone.

"Who took it?"

I hid it somewhere Luca would never search.

"Where?"

Beatrice looked at Chloe.

With someone he could not hear.

Chloe's pulse jumped.

"Leo?"

Beatrice nodded.

Gabriel stepped toward his mother.

"You gave evidence about Dad's death to a nineteen-year-old student?"

Beatrice's eyes flashed.

I gave it to the only person who listened.

Chloe translated without softening the words.

Gabriel flinched.

Beatrice continued.

Leo photographed it.

He hid the original.

He promised to tell me where after he was safe.

Then he died.

Chloe looked at Leo's old phone.

"Maybe the location is on here."

Matteo shook his head.

"We watched the only video."

"Maybe there are deleted files."

Rocco looked at her.

"Can you recover them?"

"No."

"I know someone who can."

Gabriel's eyes went to him.

"Who?"

Rocco hesitated.

"Nina Vale."

Gabriel's expression became dangerous.

"No."

Chloe looked between them.

"Who is Nina Vale?"

Rocco answered.

"A forensic accountant."

Gabriel corrected him.

"A federal forensic accountant."

Chloe stared.

"You know a federal accountant?"

Rocco shrugged.

"People contain multitudes."

Gabriel stepped closer.

"You have been talking to a federal employee?"

"Former federal employee."

"That distinction is not helping."

Rocco met his eyes.

"She left three years ago because Luca tried to frame her for taking money."

Gabriel went quiet.

"How do you know that?"

"Because your father hired me to find out if she was lying."

"And?"

"She wasn't."

Beatrice signed.

Nina.

Chloe looked at her.

"You know her?"

Beatrice nodded.

Good woman.

Very rude.

Chloe smiled faintly.

"I think I'd like her."

A security guard appeared in the doorway.

"Mr. Costello."

Gabriel turned.

"What?"

"We found the source of the motion alert."

"Who?"

The guard hesitated.

"No person."

Gabriel's eyes narrowed.

"Then what triggered it?"

The man held out a black device no bigger than a matchbox.

"This."

Rocco took it.

"Signal repeater."

"Someone planted it in the wall," the guard said.

"It spoofed the sensor and looped two cameras."

Gabriel looked toward the empty safe.

"So nobody entered tonight."

"Not tonight."

The guard swallowed.

"But the device logged its installation time."

"When?"

"Six months ago."

Everyone looked at one another.

The blue room had been compromised for six months.

Gabriel's voice was hard.

"Who had access?"

The guard hesitated again.

"You."

"Obviously."

"Mrs. Costello."

Beatrice lifted an eyebrow.

"Vincent."

Gabriel's jaw tightened.

The guard continued.

"Luca."

Rocco nodded once.

"Anyone else?"

The guard looked uncomfortable.

"One temporary access code was issued three months ago."

"To who?"

He looked at Chloe.

"Chloe Bennett."

The room went completely silent.

Chloe laughed because the alternative was screaming.

"That's impossible."

Gabriel did not move.

"You have never been here before tonight?"

She stared at him.

"Are you seriously asking me that?"

"Answer."

"No."

His expression did not change.

"Then someone used your name."

Rocco looked at the device in his hand.

"Or someone wanted her name in the access log."

Chloe's anger turned cold.

"When exactly was the code used?"

The guard checked his tablet.

"May eighteenth."

Chloe knew the date.

She did not need to look at a calendar.

May eighteenth was Leo's birthday.

Two years after his death.

Beatrice saw her face.

What?

Chloe signed with stiff fingers.

Leo's birthday.

Beatrice's eyes widened.

Gabriel watched them.

"What is it?"

Chloe looked at him.

"Someone used my name to enter this hall on my dead brother's birthday."

Gabriel's phone vibrated.

A photograph appeared on the screen from an unknown number.

He opened it.

Chloe saw herself asleep in her apartment.

The image had been taken from inside her bedroom.

Stamped beneath it was yesterday's date.

A message followed.
