Chapter 17 - The Order Beneath the Order

Chloe had already seen Gabriel's signature on authorization 417-B.
She had already known he approved surveillance connected to Leo.
But the ledger felt different.
The ledger was written like a confession without shame.
ACCIDENT RESOLUTION - BENNETT.
ORIGINAL CASE APPROVAL - G.C.
The two lines sat one beneath the other.
One could make the other look like cause and effect.
Samuel wanted exactly that.
"Now she knows," he repeated.
Gabriel turned toward him.
"Knows what?"
Samuel smiled.
"That you can blame Dominic for the messy part, but none of it begins without you."
Chloe looked at Gabriel.
He did not defend himself.
That frightened her.
Cross took the ledger away from both of them.
"Nobody touches this again."
Gabriel's eyes stayed on Chloe.
"The original approval was the red authorization."
"I know."
"I did not approve an accident."
"I know what you say you approved."
The word say cut deeper than Chloe intended.
Gabriel absorbed it.
"You do not believe me."
"I do not know what I believe."
Beatrice stepped between them.
She signed, "Do not let Samuel choose the meaning of two lines."
Chloe translated automatically.
Samuel laughed.
"Aunt Bea still defending the favorite son."
Beatrice turned toward him.
Her hands became sharp.
"Gabriel was not the favorite."
Samuel frowned.
Chloe translated.
Beatrice continued.
"Vincent was."
"Gabriel knows it."
"Antonio knew it."
"Everyone knew it."
Gabriel looked at the floor.
Samuel's smile faded.
Beatrice stepped closer to him.
"You mistake my demand for truth with defense."
"If Gabriel signed something wrong, he answers for it."
"If Dominic turned that order into murder, Dominic answers for that."
"Adults can be responsible for different parts of the same disaster."
Chloe translated every sentence.
Cross watched Beatrice with visible respect.
Samuel looked away.
Beatrice pointed at the ledger.
"Read everything."
Cross nodded.
She turned the next page.
A sequence of coded entries followed the Bennett payment.
Matteo recognized the format.
"Those are internal job numbers."
Gabriel leaned closer without touching.
"417-B."
"Then 417-B-R."
"R means recovery."
Matteo frowned.
"417-B-C."
Gabriel's face darkened.
"C was not part of the standard code."
Samuel said nothing.
Cross looked at him.
"What did C mean?"
He smiled.
"Ask Dominic."
Mara spoke from behind them.
"Cleanup."
Everyone turned.
Samuel's face changed.
Mara looked terrified but continued.
"C meant cleanup."
"I heard Dominic use it."
Gabriel stepped closer.
"When?"
"Not with Bennett."
"Other jobs."
"People who had seen too much."
Cross's expression hardened.
"How long did you work for him?"
"Three years."
"Doing what?"
"Interpreting sometimes."
"Legal meetings."
"Medical meetings."
"People he wanted to control without leaving recordings."
Chloe stared.
"He used ASL because cameras would not capture audio."
Mara nodded.
"And because most of his people could not understand it."
Beatrice's face hardened.
Dominic had taken the language everyone ignored and turned it into a secret channel for himself.
The cruelty of that landed heavily.
"Who taught him?" Chloe asked.
Mara hesitated.
"I did."
Beatrice looked at her.
Mara's eyes filled with shame.
"He said he wanted to communicate with you."
Beatrice stared.
Mara continued.
"He paid me to teach him privately."
"He learned enough to understand basic conversation."
"He never once signed to me," Beatrice signed.
Chloe translated.
Mara looked down.
"I realized later why he wanted it."
"By then he had leverage on me."
"What leverage?" Cross asked.
Mara hesitated.
"My younger brother had a gambling debt to one of Dominic's companies."
"He erased it."
"Then he reminded me who could restore it."
Cross's face hardened.
"You will tell me everything in a formal interview."
Mara nodded.
Samuel laughed.
"You think she survives long enough to testify?"
Cross turned to him.
"That sounded like a threat."
"It was an observation."
Gabriel looked toward the white van.
"Where did Dominic go?"
Samuel said nothing.
Gabriel moved closer.
Cross stepped between them again.
"I said I will handle him."
Gabriel's gaze turned cold.
"He helped kidnap my mother."
"Which is a federal and state crime."
"He helped cover my brother's disappearance."
"Also a crime."
"He is not leaving with you and disappearing into paperwork."
Cross stared at Gabriel.
"You are very used to being the only authority in the room."
"It is becoming a problem."
Chloe almost smiled.
Beatrice did.
Gabriel noticed both.
"Wonderful."
"Everyone is enjoying this."
Cross took the encrypted drive from the safe.
"Mr. Costello, if you want Dominic found, stop treating me like an obstacle."
"Leo Bennett tried to bring us evidence two years ago."
"Someone inside my office compromised him."
"I have spent two years trying to determine who."
"Dominic may know."
"Samuel may know."
"And your family archive may contain enough leverage to explain why my own people looked away."
Gabriel studied her.
"You want Antonio's archive."
"I want evidence of public corruption and homicide."
"I do not care about your father's mythology."
Beatrice signed, "Good answer."
Chloe translated.
Cross smiled faintly.
Gabriel looked surrounded.
Then Matteo's phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed immediately.
"Where?"
He looked at Gabriel.
"Keep him there."
He ended the call.
"Victor left the mansion."
Gabriel went still.
"How?"
"He told the guard Beatrice had asked him to get something from the garden."
"Then he climbed the west wall."
Chloe closed her eyes.
"Family trait."
Beatrice signed, "He always climbed walls."
Gabriel looked at his mother.
"This is not charming."
"Where is he?" Cross asked.
Matteo checked the tracking map.
"A traffic camera caught him getting into a city bus."
"Heading south."
"Why?"
Chloe thought about the dictionary.
The note.
North of the river.
The mill.
Then she remembered the white van and the words on Leo's card.
MOTHER.
MIRROR THE NUMBERS.
"Maybe Victor remembered something."
Gabriel looked at her.
"Then why not tell us?"
Beatrice signed before Chloe could answer.
"Because memory comes as fear before it comes as language."
Everyone looked at her.
She touched her temple.
"After Antonio died, I sometimes remembered a room before I remembered why I hated it."
"Vincent may be following a feeling."
Chloe translated.
Cross looked at Matteo.
"What is south from here that connects to Dominic?"
Matteo opened a map.
"Pier Nine."
"Il Canto."
"The old Costello office."
"Saint Michael cemetery."
Gabriel's face changed at the last location.
Chloe saw it.
"Vincent's grave."
He nodded.
Beatrice stood.
"He is going to see whether he is dead."
Gabriel did not need Chloe to translate the gesture toward the floor and the sign for DEAD.
He understood enough.
"We go now."
Cross held up a hand.
"My agents go with you."
Gabriel opened his mouth.
Cross cut him off.
"That was not a request."
Chloe looked at Gabriel.
"How does it feel?"
He gave her a flat look.
"I am beginning to understand why you hate that phrase."
They reached Saint Michael cemetery as rain began.
Victor stood in front of his own grave.
He wore the same maintenance jacket.
Water ran through his hair.
He stared at the name VINCENT ANTONIO COSTELLO carved into black granite.
Gabriel stopped twenty feet away.
Beatrice moved first.
She walked toward Victor slowly.
He saw her.
His face collapsed.
"Mother."
The sign came with both hands shaking.
Beatrice reached him.
She touched his face.
Victor began to cry without sound.
Then he signed something so fast Chloe missed the first part.
Beatrice caught it.
Her expression changed.
She turned toward Chloe.
"Again," Chloe signed.
Victor repeated himself more slowly.
"I remember fire."
"I remember Dominic."
"I remember Leo."
Chloe's heart stopped.
She stepped closer.
"What about Leo?"
Victor looked at her.
His face filled with recognition and horror.
"Leo found me after the fire."
Gabriel went still.
"Where?"
Victor signed, "Clinic."
"He came once."
"He told me my name."
"He said Gabe thought I was dead."
Chloe's eyes filled.
"What happened after Leo came?"
Victor began trembling.
Beatrice held his arms.
He forced himself to continue.
"Dominic saw camera."
"Dominic knew Leo found me."
Chloe could barely breathe.
Victor's next sign was unmistakable.
"Dominic ordered accident."
Gabriel looked at Samuel, who stood under federal guard behind them.
Samuel's face remained blank.
Victor pointed at him.
Then he signed, "Samuel drove black car."
Cross turned sharply.
Samuel looked at her.
"He has brain damage."
Victor saw the words on his lips.
His expression transformed.
For the first time, fear became anger.
He stepped toward Samuel.
Gabriel caught his brother gently.
Victor fought for one second.
Then he looked at Gabriel's hand on his arm.
A memory seemed to move through him.
He signed, "You stopped me before."
Gabriel stared.
"Before what?" Chloe asked.
Victor looked at Samuel.
"Before I hurt him."
"Warehouse."
"Gabe came earlier."
Gabriel frowned.
"I was in Boston."
Victor shook his head violently.
"Not fire night."
"Different night."
"Before."
He touched his temple, frustrated.
Then he pointed at Gabriel and signed, "Red paper."
Gabriel's face changed.
"The authorization."
Victor nodded.
"I argued with you about it."
Gabriel looked stunned.
"I do not remember that."
Victor signed, "You tore one."
"Dominic brought another."
Gabriel went still.
Matteo looked at him.
"There were two versions?"
Victor nodded.
The ledger showed ORIGINAL CASE APPROVAL - G.C.
But if Gabriel had rejected the first authorization and Dominic returned with a different one, the sequence mattered.
Cross looked at Samuel.
"Where is the rejected version?"
Samuel said nothing.
Beatrice suddenly signed, "Antonio's archive."
Chloe translated.
"If Dominic kept leverage, he kept rejected papers too."
Gabriel looked at the encrypted drive from the van.
Cross had it secured in an evidence case.
"Then we need to open the drive."
Cross nodded.
"My lab can start tonight."
Samuel smiled again.
"You are all still behind."
Cross turned.
"Behind what?"
Samuel looked toward Gabriel.
"Dominic is not trying to escape."
"He is trying to become Gabriel."
Gabriel's eyes narrowed.
Samuel's smile widened.
"While you were chasing ghosts, your board met without you."
"D.C. Strategic Group just filed the ownership transfer."
May you like
"By morning, every legitimate Costello company will belong to Dominic."
