Chapter 16 - The Signature

Beatrice did not deny the signature.
That was the worst part.
She sat at the kitchen table while Gabriel placed the emergency-account authorization in front of her.
Knox had obtained it from the files Vincent uploaded.
BEATRICE COSTELLO appeared at the bottom in blue ink.
The transfer amount was fifty thousand dollars.
The date was the day before Leo died.
Gabriel stared at his mother.
“You signed this.”
Beatrice nodded.
Chloe felt the room tighten.
Knox remained standing near the window.
She did not interrupt.
Gabriel lifted the second document.
BENNETT MATTER CLOSED.
A copy of Beatrice’s signature appeared beneath the sentence.
“You signed this too?”
Beatrice shook her head fiercely.
No.
Chloe translated.
Gabriel looked between the two pages.
“The signatures are identical.”
Beatrice signed.
Exactly identical.
Knox stepped closer.
“That matters.”
She looked at Gabriel.
“Real signatures vary.”
“These appear to be the same image reproduced twice.”
Chloe stared at the pages.
Voss had copied Beatrice’s legitimate signature from the relocation payment onto a false closure order.
One signature had been desperation.
The other had been blackmail.
Luca had spent two years believing Beatrice authorized Leo’s death or its cover-up.
Beatrice signed.
That is why Luca never accused me directly.
“He thought you could destroy him too,” Chloe said.
Yes.
Gabriel sat down.
“So Voss controlled Luca with a forged order.”
Knox nodded.
“And likely controlled Beatrice with the fear that anyone who saw the real transfer would misunderstand it.”
Anthony entered the kitchen.
He had returned from Vincent’s clinic.
“Mia is secure.”
Vincent is awake.
“He confirms Voss kept copies of everything in three places.”
Knox looked at him.
“Where?”
“Green Room.”
“An office at Pier 14.”
“And somewhere Vincent never learned.”
Gabriel looked at Chloe.
“Pier 14.”
She remembered the Harbor manifests.
Several shipments had used that pier.
Knox began giving instructions to her team by phone.
Gabriel’s phone rang again.
Luca.
Knox nodded for him to answer.
Gabriel did.
“Where is Samuel?”
“Still alive.”
Luca sounded tired now.
Not arrogant.
Not amused.
Tired.
“I want to meet.”
Knox shook her head.
Gabriel watched her.
“Where?”
“Saint Michael’s.”
“Twenty minutes.”
“No men.”
Luca paused.
“Bring Chloe.”
Gabriel’s expression changed.
“No.”
Chloe said, “Yes.”
Both men on the call went silent.
Gabriel covered the phone.
“Absolutely not.”
Chloe looked at him.
“He asked for me because he thinks I am leverage.”
“Exactly.”
“Then let him think that.”
Knox intervened.
“She is not going without federal coverage.”
Gabriel looked at her.
“That is still going.”
Chloe crossed her arms.
“This stopped being your decision about six chapters ago.”
Gabriel stared.
Anthony looked away to hide a smile.
Beatrice signed.
She is right.
Gabriel sighed.
“I hate all of you.”
Beatrice smiled.
Chloe almost did too.
Saint Michael’s was an old Catholic church squeezed between two office towers.
Luca sat alone in the third pew.
At least he appeared alone.
Knox’s agents stayed outside and across the street.
Gabriel entered first.
Chloe followed several steps behind.
Luca looked over his shoulder.
“You came.”
Gabriel sat one pew behind him.
“Talk.”
Luca remained facing the altar.
“Voss took Samuel because Samuel can prove the crash was engineered beyond my order.”
Chloe sat at the far end of Gabriel’s pew.
“You ordered Doran to terrorize Leo.”
Luca closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
The admission came without excuse.
Chloe felt anger burn through her.
“He died because of that.”
“Yes.”
“You covered it up.”
“Yes.”
“You threatened people.”
“Yes.”
Gabriel leaned forward.
“And you expect us to trust you now?”
“No.”
Luca finally turned.
“I expect you to understand that Voss has become worse than the thing I was trying to protect.”
Chloe laughed bitterly.
“That is a very convenient moral awakening.”
Luca accepted the hit.
“I am not asking you to forgive me.”
“Good.”
“I am asking you to help me stop him.”
Gabriel’s voice was cold.
“Why?”
“Because Voss has copies of records that can send half the council to prison.”
“That sounds like their problem.”
“He also has fabricated records that put crimes under your name.”
Gabriel’s eyes narrowed.
“What crimes?”
“Orders you never gave.”
“Payments you never approved.”
“Security reports with your signature.”
“Just like Beatrice.”
Chloe felt the structure become clear.
Voss had spent years collecting real corruption and mixing it with forged responsibility.
That way nobody could expose him without fearing what else would be exposed.
Gabriel asked, “What does he want?”
“Control.”
“Of the family?”
“Of the money.”
Luca laughed without humor.
“He does not care about the family.”
“He thinks we are all sentimental idiots.”
Gabriel looked at him.
“He may have a point.”
Luca almost smiled.
Then Chloe asked the question that mattered.
“Where is Samuel?”
Luca’s face hardened.
“Pier 14.”
Gabriel stood.
Luca turned.
“Sit down.”
Gabriel did not.
“It is a trap.”
“I assumed.”
“No.”
Luca’s voice sharpened.
“You do not understand.”
“Voss wants you there.”
“He wants the ledger brought into the same room as Samuel.”
“Then he wants a recording of you trading evidence for a hostage.”
Knox’s warning came back to Chloe.
Voss was not only trying to survive.
He was building a version of events in which everyone else looked guiltier than he did.
Luca continued.
“If you walk into Pier 14, you give him the final piece.”
Gabriel sat again.
“What is your alternative?”
Luca looked at Chloe.
“Your mother.”
Gabriel’s face turned dangerous.
“What about her?”
“Voss believes Beatrice still has the original Harbor copy Samuel gave her.”
“She does not.”
“I know.”
“Voss does not.”
Chloe stared at Luca.
“You want to use Beatrice as bait.”
“No.”
Luca looked suddenly older.
“I am telling you that Voss already has.”
Gabriel stood again.
“What did you do?”
“Nothing.”
“What did you do?”
“I called Hudson Street before this meeting.”
“No answer.”
Gabriel pulled out his phone.
Three missed calls from Anthony.
He had silenced it inside the church.
His face went white.
He called back.
Anthony answered on the first ring.
“Gabriel.”
“What happened?”
“Beatrice is gone.”
Chloe stood so fast she hit the pew.
Gabriel’s hand tightened around the phone.
“How?”
“Two federal agents arrived with credentials.”
“They said Knox sent them to relocate her.”
Knox’s voice came through Gabriel’s earpiece from outside the church.
“I sent no one.”
Anthony continued.
“They had uniforms.”
“They had a government vehicle.”
“By the time we verified the names, they were gone.”
Chloe felt sick.
“Security footage?”
Anthony paused.
“Yes.”
“What?”
“She looked directly into the hallway camera before they took her.”
“She signed something.”
Chloe’s heart pounded.
“Send it.”
The video arrived seconds later.
Chloe opened it on Gabriel’s phone.
Beatrice stood between two men.
Her hands appeared calm at her sides.
Then she looked into the camera.
Her right hand moved once.
Voss.
Then again.
Pier 14.
Then one final sign.
Trap.
The men pushed her toward the door.
Before she disappeared, Beatrice looked back at the camera and signed something else with two fingers against her coat.
Small.
Almost hidden.
Chloe replayed it.
Gabriel stared at her.
“What?”
Chloe’s pulse accelerated.
“She gave us a second message.”
“What did she say?”
Chloe looked at him.
“Not the pier.”
She replayed the sign.
“Above the blue door.”
Luca went still.
Gabriel turned toward him.
“You know what that means.”
Luca’s face lost color.
“Yes.”
“Where?”
Luca stood.
“Pier 14 has an old customs office above a blue loading door.”
He looked at Chloe.
“Voss did not take Beatrice to the warehouse floor.”
“He took her to the room where Salvatore used to keep the originals.”
Gabriel’s expression changed.
Luca’s face had lost the smugness he wore whenever he believed he controlled a room.
Now he looked like a man standing at the edge of a confession he had spent years avoiding.
Chloe signed a quick summary to Beatrice.
Beatrice’s answer was immediate.
Ask him what Voss fears most.
Chloe translated the question aloud.
Luca gave a bitter laugh.
“Witnesses who can compare stories.”
“Then why keep Samuel alive?”
“Because Samuel knows where Leo copied the records.”
Gabriel leaned forward.
“And you know that because?”
“Because Voss has been tearing apart every place connected to Leo for two years.”
Luca finally looked at Chloe.
“He never found the original.”
The words landed harder than a threat.
If the original still existed, Leo had left them more than a mystery.
He had left leverage.
“And Samuel?”
Luca looked toward the church doors.
“If Voss is following his old habits, Samuel is there too.”
Chloe closed the video.
May you like
The trap was real.
But Beatrice had just shown them where its center was.
