CHAPTER 3 — THE MONSTER EXPOSED

Three days later, Enzo began investigating.
Quietly.
Without telling Harper.
He expected old rumors.
Maybe a few witnesses.
Instead, he uncovered a nightmare.
Former maids.
Drivers.
Tutors.
Nannies.
Every one of them had signed confidentiality agreements before suddenly disappearing from the Whitcomb estate.
One elderly housekeeper finally agreed to meet him.
She cried during the interview.
"I tried to help that little girl," she whispered.
"Her mother tried too."
Enzo froze.
"Her mother knew?"
The woman nodded.
"She died because she knew."
The room went silent.
A car accident.
That was what the newspapers had reported fifteen years earlier.
But the witness handed Enzo a sealed envelope.
Inside were photographs.
Hospital records.
Police reports that had vanished from official files.
And one statement from Harper's mother.
If anything happens to me, Preston did it.
For the first time in years, Enzo felt genuine fear.
Not for himself.
For Harper.
Because if Preston had murdered his own wife...
He would never allow his daughter to escape.
That night, Enzo returned home and found Harper asleep beside the library fireplace.
She looked peaceful for the first time.
Fragile.
Broken.
Human.
As he covered her with a blanket, she suddenly whispered in her sleep.
"Mom..."
Enzo closed his eyes.

The revenge he wanted was no longer enough.
Now he wanted justice.
