Chapter 15 - SERENA’S FINAL PLAN

The video ended after twelve seconds.
Mara replayed it.
Serena appeared alone in the federal transport van.
No visible location.
No outside sound except a low mechanical hum.
The container beside her carried Ethan’s hospital identification number.
Victor looked toward Dr. Halpern.
“What is inside?”
“If the label is accurate, a concentrated supply of the same sedative.”
“How much?”
“Enough for hundreds of doses.”
Lily felt Ethan’s heartbeat against her chest.
“Why would it have his identification number?”
Dr. Halpern studied the image.
“It may have been prepared using stolen medical records.”
“Or it is from a private pharmacy connected to the Montigue Foundation.”
Mara contacted the federal transport unit.
Serena’s vehicle had never reached the detention center.
The van was found beneath an overpass.
Two guards were unconscious.
Their body cameras were missing.
A third guard had disappeared.
Victor looked at Dominic’s dark body-camera screen.
They had two active threats.
Darius inside the clinic.
Serena moving with the sedative.
Adrian remained in federal custody, but his transport route had also been compromised earlier.
Everything was collapsing at once.
Mara received an update.
“Dominic is alive.”
“Mercer was shot in the leg.”
“Darius escaped through the clinic’s lower tunnel.”
Victor closed his eyes briefly.
“He planned every exit.”
A federal agent entered the command room.
“We recovered the transport van’s navigation history.”
“It stopped near the Blackwood marina before being abandoned.”
Victor looked at the estate map.
The marina connected to the lake through an old maintenance channel.
Serena could have boarded a boat.
Dominic returned to the secure line.
His face appeared on-screen.
Blood marked his temple.
“The clinic archive contains a map of Blackwood properties.”
“One location is circled.”
“The old lake house.”
Victor’s expression changed.
The lake house had belonged to his mother.
It had been closed since her death.
Only family knew about the underground boathouse.
“Serena is going there,” Lily said.
Victor nodded.
“Why?” Mara asked.
“Because the property contains the original family trust room.”
Victor looked toward Ethan.
“My father kept paper copies of every succession agreement.”
“If Serena destroys them, she can challenge Amelia’s amendment.”
“And if Ethan dies?” Lily asked.
“Lily becomes trustee,” Mara said.
“Unless Serena destroys the amendment proving it.”
Victor completed the thought.
“Then Adrian becomes the nearest Blackwood successor.”
Serena’s plan had changed.
She no longer intended to share power.
She would destroy the documents.
Kill Ethan.
Blame Adrian or Darius.
Then bargain for immunity using everything she knew.
Lily looked at Victor.
“You cannot leave Ethan here.”
“This location was compromised.”
Mara nodded.
“We move him to a federal medical center.”
“No Montigue Foundation connections.”
Victor looked at Dr. Halpern.
“Go with them.”
Lily stood.
“I’m going too.”
Victor shook his head.
“Serena wants you.”
“She wants Ethan dead.”
“He needs someone he knows.”
Mara supported her.
“Lily travels with the child.”
“Victor goes to the lake house under federal command.”
Dominic would lead the ground team.
Victor hated every part of the arrangement.
But he no longer confused control with safety.
He agreed.
The medical convoy left through a hidden service exit.
Lily sat beside Ethan in the armored ambulance.
Dr. Halpern monitored him.
Two federal agents rode in front.
Rain began falling over Chicago.
The city lights blurred across the windows.
Lily kept thinking about Serena’s video.
The mechanical hum.
No traffic noise.
A metal wall behind her.
The container.
The necklace.
Something felt wrong.
“Play the video again,” she told the agent.
He displayed it on a tablet.
Lily listened.
The hum repeated every four seconds.
A deep vibration.
Then a lighter metallic rattle.
She had heard that rhythm before.
At the mansion.
“The freight elevator.”
The agent looked at her.
“What?”
“The service elevator beneath the Blackwood lake house makes that sound.”
“I went there once to inventory children’s furniture.”
“She recorded the video after reaching the property.”
The agent contacted Victor.
His team was still twenty minutes away.
Lily looked at the road.
The ambulance was passing an exit that led toward the lake.
“We are closer.”
Dr. Halpern shook his head.
“We are not changing route.”
“Serena may be preparing the sedative now.”
“Federal teams are responding.”
“She knows the house.”
“They don’t.”
The agent received Victor’s order.
Continue to the medical center.
Lily took the radio.
“Victor.”
His voice answered.
“No.”
“You haven’t heard me.”
“I know what you are going to say.”
“We are twelve minutes from the lake house.”
“You are carrying Ethan directly toward the woman trying to kill him.”
“She expects you.”
“She does not expect me.”
“She has attacked you twice.”
“And both times, she failed because she underestimated me.”
Victor was silent.
Lily continued.
“Your team will enter through the front or boathouse.”
“There is a laundry tunnel from the caretaker’s cottage.”
“Serena does not know I found it.”
“How do you know she does not?”
“Because she refused to enter the laundry area when we visited.”
“She said it smelled damp.”
“She never saw the tunnel.”
Victor looked toward Dominic.
Then back at the radio.
“You stay inside the ambulance with Ethan.”
“The agents use the tunnel.”
Lily accepted.
The convoy changed direction.
The lake house appeared through rain and trees.
It was a dark stone building overlooking the water.
No lights showed in the windows.
Victor’s team approached from the northern road.
Dominic’s agents moved toward the boathouse.
Lily guided two officers to the caretaker’s cottage.
The tunnel entrance was hidden behind an old linen cabinet.
They opened it.
Cold air rose from the stairs.
One agent descended.
The second remained with Lily and Ethan.
Minutes passed.
The radio remained quiet.
Then a voice whispered.
“Tunnel clear.”
“Movement near trust room.”
Victor’s team entered simultaneously.
Lily waited in the ambulance.
Ethan began fussing.
She sang softly.
The same lullaby her mother used.
The mansion lights suddenly turned on.
Every window glowed.
A woman’s voice sounded through hidden outdoor speakers.
“Welcome home, Victor.”
Serena.
Victor entered the main hall with Dominic.
The trust-room door stood open.
Documents covered the floor.
A metal container sat on the table.
Empty.
Serena appeared on the upper balcony.
She wore a black dress and Amelia’s necklace.
“Where is the sedative?” Victor asked.
Serena smiled.
“You brought it with you.”
Lily heard the words over the radio.
She looked toward the ambulance medical cabinet.
Dr. Halpern opened it.
Inside were sealed emergency medications loaded at the safe residence.
One case carried Ethan’s identification number.
The label matched Serena’s video.
Dr. Halpern checked the seal.
It had been replaced.
“The convoy was supplied from the federal pharmacy.”
Mara’s voice came through.
“Montigue controls a contractor inside the pharmacy network.”
Lily looked at the oxygen line connected to Ethan’s monitor.
A clear solution was already moving through the tubing.
Dr. Halpern clamped it immediately.
“How much entered?” Lily asked.
“I don’t know.”
Ethan’s eyes began closing.
The ambulance doors locked automatically.
The agent tried the controls.
Nothing moved.
Smoke filled the front compartment.
The driver collapsed against the wheel.
Serena’s voice came through the ambulance speaker.
“You always wanted to save him, Lily.”
“Now you can watch yourself fail.”
Dr. Halpern searched for the reversal agent.
The vial slot was empty.
Lily looked toward the lake house.
Victor stood behind one of the glowing windows.
He did not know the ambulance had become a trap.
Lily grabbed the emergency hammer.
She struck the rear window.
The reinforced glass held.
She hit it again.
A crack appeared.
Ethan’s breathing slowed.
Dr. Halpern began assisted ventilation.
Lily struck the glass a third time.
It shattered outward.
The agent climbed through and opened the rear doors manually.
Fresh air entered.
Lily lifted Ethan.
“Where is the antidote?”
Dr. Halpern searched the cabinets.
“Gone.”
Inside the house, Serena held a small silver case.
Victor saw it.
“The reversal drug,” she said.
“Come upstairs alone.”
Victor looked toward Dominic.
Serena raised the case over the balcony.
“Anyone follows, it goes into the fire.”
Victor began climbing.
Lily entered through the caretaker tunnel with Ethan in her arms.
Dr. Halpern followed carrying emergency equipment.
She reached the main hall as Victor arrived at the upper landing.
Serena saw her.
For the first time, fear entered Serena’s face.
“You were supposed to stay in the ambulance.”
Lily looked at the silver case.
“Give it to the doctor.”
Serena laughed.
“You are still giving orders.”
Ethan’s body became limp against Lily.
Victor took another step.
Serena opened the case.
A single vial rested inside.
“Choose,” she said.
“Your son or the evidence in the trust room.”
A small flame appeared beneath the scattered documents downstairs.
Serena had already started the fire.
Victor did not look at the papers.
“My son.”
Serena’s expression changed.
She had expected hesitation.
She had built her entire plan around men choosing power.
Victor reached for the vial.
Serena threw it over the balcony.
Lily moved.
She caught the case against her chest.
Victor seized Serena before she could run.
Dr. Halpern took the vial.
He administered the reversal drug to Ethan.
Fire spread across the trust-room floor.
Dominic ordered evacuation.
Victor restrained Serena.
She stared at Lily.
“You think this makes you his mother?”
Lily held Ethan while the doctor worked.
“No.”
“Protecting him does not require replacing anyone.”
Serena’s face twisted.
“You have his trust.”
“You have the child.”
“You have the inheritance.”
“You took everything.”
Lily looked at her.
“You lost everything the moment you believed love was something you could steal.”
Ethan coughed.
His eyes opened.
Victor closed his eyes in relief.
Then a gunshot sounded from the boathouse.
Dominic’s radio came alive.
“Adrian escaped federal custody.”
“He is inside the property.”
The main doors slammed shut.
Steel shutters covered the windows.
The fire alarm stopped.
A man’s voice came through the speakers.
Adrian.
“Serena.”
“You have failed for the last time.”
Serena’s face went white.
A countdown appeared on the wall.
Ten minutes.
May you like
Victor looked toward the burning trust room.
Adrian had sealed them inside a house filling with smoke.
