Chapter 7 - THE CONTAINER WITH NO CARGO

The missing container was found at 3:06 p.m.

It was sitting inside an abandoned cold-storage warehouse less than three miles from the river.

No truck was attached.

No workers were nearby.

The warehouse doors were open.

That made Rachel more cautious, not less.

Nothing in Vincent's backup plan had been left accidentally so far.

The building was cleared room by room.

No Owen Mercer.

No Evan Pike.

No missing driver.

No obvious trap.

Only the container.

It stood in the center of the main floor beneath dead fluorescent lights.

The number matched Claire's list.

Lorenzo was not allowed near the building.

He hated that.

Isabella was not allowed near it either.

She hated it less.

They watched through a secure video feed from a federal office two blocks away.

A hazardous-materials team checked the exterior.

Nothing immediately dangerous was detected.

A bomb technician examined the locking mechanism.

No device.

Rachel still waited.

"What are we expecting?" Lorenzo asked.

"The unexpected."

"That is not operationally useful."

"Neither are most of your comments."

Isabella rubbed her forehead.

"Please continue flirting later."

Rachel looked offended.

Lorenzo looked more offended.

"That is not what this is."

"Good."

The container doors were opened at 3:28.

Everyone expected cargo.

There was none.

The container was almost empty.

One folding chair sat in the center.

A battery-powered work light stood beside it.

A camera on a tripod faced the chair.

And on the floor was the missing Ridgeway driver's jacket.

No driver.

Rachel's expression hardened.

"This was a recording room."

Isabella stared at the chair.

Her hands began to shake.

Lorenzo noticed.

"Do not watch."

"I am fine."

"You are not."

She looked at him sharply.

"Do not decide that for me."

He stopped.

"Then tell me what you need."

She breathed slowly.

"I need to know if that chair was used on Claire."

The possibility had been sitting between them from the moment the doors opened.

Rachel heard it.

She did not soften the truth.

"We will test it."

Investigators found no visible blood on the chair.

They found hair fibers.

They found adhesive residue on the floor.

They found a power cable leading to a small locked case bolted inside the wall.

The case contained storage drives.

Five of them.

Four were encrypted.

One was damaged.

The camera's internal card contained only a recent video.

Recorded that morning.

Rachel played it without sound first.

A man sat in the chair.

The missing Ridgeway driver.

His name was Tomas Vale.

Thirty-eight.

Married.

Two children.

He looked frightened but physically conscious.

Someone off camera asked questions.

Tomas answered.

Then the video ended.

"Turn on audio," Isabella said.

Rachel did.

A distorted voice came from behind the camera.

"Who told you to pick up container HN-8841?"

Tomas swallowed.

"Dispatch."

"Name."

"The order came through the system."

"Name."

"I do not know."

The voice remained calm.

"Who met you after Gate Four?"

Tomas looked toward someone off camera.

"A man in a gray SUV."

"Name."

"He said Owen."

Lorenzo looked at Rachel.

The video continued.

"What did Owen tell you?"

"Drive to Kearny."

"Then?"

"He got in."

"Was he injured?"

Tomas nodded.

"No."

Rachel paused the video.

"Evan Pike's blood was in the cab."

Mason frowned.

"But Owen was not injured."

Isabella looked at the screen.

"Then Pike was there before Owen."

Rachel resumed.

The distorted voice asked the next question.

"Did Owen mention Evan Pike?"

Tomas stared directly toward the camera.

"He said Evan failed."

"Failed what?"

"I do not know."

"What else?"

Tomas hesitated.

"He said the girl saw too much."

Sophia's daughter was the first person everyone thought of.

Isabella stood so quickly the chair behind her moved.

"Emma."

Rachel raised a hand.

"Wait."

The video voice asked.

"What girl?"

Tomas shook his head.

"I do not know."

"Did he say Emma?"

"No."

"Sophia?"

"No."

"Claire?"

Tomas looked confused.

"No."

The distorted voice asked one final question.

"Where is Owen now?"

Tomas answered.

"He said he was going to recover the ledger before the girl could give it away."

The video ended.

Rachel stared at the black screen.

"What girl?"

Lorenzo's phone was not with him, but his mind moved through every woman connected to the case.

Emma was three.

Megan was thirty-six.

Claire was dead.

Isabella was the obvious target, but Owen would not call her a girl if speaking precisely.

Mason looked at the old Halcyon records.

"Owen Mercer has a daughter."

Rachel turned.

"How old?"

"Twenty-one."

"Name?"

"Natalie."

The investigators pulled her file.

Natalie Mercer was a senior at Rutgers University.

She studied accounting.

Her phone went straight to voicemail.

Her apartment roommate had not seen her since the previous night.

Her father had paid her tuition through a family account.

Nothing seemed connected to Moretti Global.

Then an analyst searched Claire Donnelly's recovered email archive.

One address appeared twice.

Natalie Mercer had emailed Claire eleven months earlier.

Subject line:

INVOICE QUESTION.

Isabella stared.

"Open it."

The first email was short.

Ms. Donnelly, I think my father is using a company name that does not belong to him.

I found payment records while helping with his taxes.

Can you tell me if Halcyon Marine Repair is one of your vendors?

Claire replied two hours later.

Please do not send documents by email.

Can you meet somewhere public?

The second email came three days later.

I am scared he will know I looked.

That was all.

No meeting record.

No attachment.

No response visible in the recovered archive.

Rachel looked at Isabella.

"Claire had another source."

"Before me."

"Yes."

The entire case shifted again.

Claire had not discovered Gate Nine alone.

Owen Mercer's own daughter had pointed her toward Halcyon.

Mason swore quietly.

"If Owen knows Natalie talked to Claire, she is in danger."

Rachel was already calling Rutgers police.

Lorenzo stared at the email.

"Why did Claire never tell Isabella?"

Isabella answered herself.

"Because protecting a source meant not naming her."

Rachel nodded.

"Especially the source's father."

The damaged drive from the container was examined first because it was not encrypted.

Most files were corrupted.

One video fragment survived.

It showed Evan Pike entering the warehouse at 6:41 that morning.

He carried a backpack.

He was alone.

At 6:47, Owen Mercer entered.

They argued.

No audio survived.

At 6:52, Owen struck Pike.

Pike fell against the truck cab parked inside the warehouse.

That explained the blood.

At 6:55, Pike stood again.

Then he did something unexpected.

He handed Owen the backpack.

They were not enemies.

The fight had not been betrayal.

It had been discipline.

At 7:03, they left together in the gray SUV.

Tomas Vale arrived later and moved the container according to the automated dispatch order.

The recording of his interrogation happened after that.

Someone had brought him back.

Someone had questioned him.

Then someone had removed him.

The obvious assumption was Owen.

But the distorted voice on the video did not match Owen's build in the reflection visible on the container wall.

The person behind the camera was smaller.

Possibly female.

Rachel replayed the reflection.

"The Keeper may not be Owen."

Mason frowned.

"Then what is he?"

"An operator."

Isabella looked at the email from Natalie.

"Or a father trying to erase what his daughter started."

At 4:12 p.m., Rutgers police called back.

Natalie's campus parking permit had been used that morning.

Her car was not on campus.

A camera showed her entering a student records building at 8:03.

She left at 8:19 carrying a blue folder.

At 8:27, she walked toward a coffee shop two blocks away.

At 8:29, a gray SUV pulled to the curb.

Natalie stopped.

The passenger door opened.

She did not run.

She got in willingly.

The driver was her father.

Owen Mercer.

But before the SUV drove away, Natalie looked directly at the street camera.

She lifted the blue folder against the window.

On the cover she had written two enormous words in black marker.

CLAIRE'S COPY.

Then she tapped the folder twice and pointed east.

Rachel leaned toward the screen.

"She knew the camera was there."

Isabella's heart began beating faster.

"She is leaving directions."

The camera east of the coffee shop showed the SUV again.

Then another.

Then another.

For seven blocks, Natalie kept the folder visible whenever they passed a traffic camera.

On the eighth block, Owen noticed.

He took the folder from her.

The next camera showed Natalie sitting rigidly in the passenger seat.

May you like

The next showed the SUV turning toward the river.

And the final image showed Evan Pike in the back seat.
