Chapter 2: The Last Secret
Chapter 2: The Last Secret
During the third week of the trial, Valeria's own attorney made an unexpected request.
His client wished to testify.
The courtroom fell silent.
Valeria walked slowly to the witness stand.
Gone were the designer gowns.
Gone was the confident smile.
She looked tired.
Older.
Broken.
For several minutes she denied everything.
Then the prosecutor presented one final piece of evidence.
A damaged security backup recovered from an abandoned storage facility.
The video showed Valeria entering the orphanage basement shortly before the fire.
Moments later...
She locked the emergency control room.
Then walked away.
Without ever looking back.
The courtroom gasped.
Valeria closed her eyes.
Tears rolled silently down her face.
"I never meant for anyone to die," she whispered.
"I only wanted to destroy the financial records."
"But the fire spread too quickly."
The confession echoed through the courtroom.
Families of the victims held each other's hands.
Some cried.
Others simply stared.
The little girl never looked away.
When the judge asked whether she wished to say anything, she stood quietly.
"My caregiver gave her life so children like me could live."
"Today..."
"I finally kept my promise to her."
Even the courtroom reporters lowered their cameras.
