Chapter 4: The Letter That Saved a Family
Chapter 4: The Letter That Saved a Family
Three weeks later.
The storm was gone.
Sunlight filled a small house near the coast.
Margaret sat on the porch holding the same letter.
The letter that had broken her heart.
And then healed it.
A car slowly pulled into the driveway.
Her breath caught.
The door opened.
Miles stepped out.
For a moment neither moved.
Neither spoke.
Months of pain stood between them.
Then Miles lowered his head.
"I'm sorry, Mom."
His voice cracked.
The strong man who had faced criminals and killers suddenly looked like a frightened little boy.
"I hated every second of it."
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
"You should have trusted me."
"I know."
"I would have helped you."
"I know."
Silence.
Then she stood.
Walked toward him.
And wrapped her arms around him.
The hug broke them both.
Years of love overcame months of fear.
For a long time neither let go.
Finally Margaret smiled through her tears.
"You idiot."
Miles laughed.
A real laugh.
The first one she had heard in nearly a year.
"I learned that from you."
The two stood together watching the ocean.
The nightmare was over.
The enemies were gone.
The lies were finished.
And although the letter had nearly destroyed their family, it had also saved it.
Because true love is not measured by how tightly we hold on to someone.
May you like
Sometimes it is measured by what we are willing to sacrifice to keep them safe.
