Chapter 3: The Test No One Knew They Were Taking

Within thirty minutes, black luxury cars surrounded the boutique.
Senior executives hurried inside.
The regional director arrived breathless.
The moment he saw Eleanor, he lowered his head.
"Mrs. Whitmore..."
"I'm sorry."
She raised a hand.
"Save your apology."
She pointed toward the surveillance room.
"I want every second of today's footage."
The recordings were projected onto a large screen.
Every customer watched.
There was the manager rolling Eleanor toward the exit before asking whether she needed help.
There was Daniel abandoning his assigned duties to catch the wheelchair before it overturned.
There were employees standing still while pearls scattered across the floor.
Then came the final image.
Daniel quietly kneeling alone, gathering every pearl without expecting praise.
The room was silent.
The regional director finally spoke.
"Effective immediately..."
"The store manager is terminated for misconduct, discrimination, and abuse of authority."
Security quietly escorted the stunned manager away.
She stopped beside Daniel.
"You think you've won?"
Daniel simply replied,
"I wasn't trying to win."
"I was trying to help someone."
For the first time all day...
Eleanor laughed.
A warm, genuine laugh.
She turned to the executives.
"That answer."
"Is exactly why he's ready."
The executives exchanged confused glances.
"Ready for what?"
Eleanor smiled.
"For my chair."
Shock rippled through the room.
Daniel stepped backward.
"I... I only started here six months ago."
"I don't know anything about running a company."
Eleanor walked closer.
"I can teach business."
"I cannot teach character."
