Chapter 2: The Truth He Refused to See

That evening Ryan drove straight to the hospital.
Every nurse recognized him.
Not with kindness.
With disappointment.
One elderly nurse quietly handed him a small plastic bag.
Inside was Emma's phone.
Its cracked screen still displayed dozens of unanswered calls.
Every one of them made to him.
The final voicemail played automatically.
Her exhausted voice filled the empty hallway.
"Ryan... I can't stop bleeding."
A long silence.
"I don't think I can hold the baby much longer."
Another painful breath.
"I'm scared."
Then...
"If something happens to me... please tell him I loved him."
The recording ended.
Ryan collapsed into one of the waiting-room chairs.
For the first time in his life...
He understood what abandonment truly looked like.
The hospital administrator approached him with another envelope.
Inside were divorce papers.
Already signed.
Along with a handwritten letter.
Ryan,
I didn't leave because you went on vacation.
I left because you looked at my suffering and decided your birthday mattered more.
A husband can make mistakes.
But a father doesn't abandon his family when they are fighting for their lives.
Our son deserves someone he can trust.
Right now...
That isn't you.
Goodbye.
Emma.
Ryan cried harder than he ever had.
But there was nobody left to comfort him.
