Chapter 11 - The Voice on the Recording

Victor Shaw's recording appeared two days later in a formal response from Vanessa's attorney.

It was less than one minute long.

Thomas's voice sounded tired and strained.

"Daniel should have the house," he said.

A pause followed.

"Margaret will understand."

The recording ended.

I listened three times.

The words hurt more each time.

For a moment I wondered whether the man I had loved had betrayed me too.

Richard asked where, when, and by whom the recording had been made.

He requested the original file and its metadata.

"Don't build a conclusion around a clipped sentence," he told me.

"I know my husband's voice," I answered.

"I am not disputing that. I'm disputing whether we have the whole conversation."

The hospital's visitation log provided one clue.

On the date alleged, Victor had visited under the name of a family friend.

Daniel later confirmed he had brought Victor to discuss business debts.

A nurse remembered the visit because Thomas became visibly upset afterward.

Her contemporaneous chart note described agitation and repeated requests for his wife.

My throat tightened as I read it.

I had been working a shift downstairs that afternoon.

Had someone deliberately chosen a time I was absent?

An audio specialist reviewed the copy we had received and cautioned that no reliable conclusion about editing could be drawn without the source file.

Vanessa circulated the clip anyway.

Within days a local community page was full of comments calling me greedy.

A woman I'd known since Daniel was in elementary school wrote that wealth had changed me.

I wanted to tell her I had not even known about the wealth when I was turned out.

Instead, Richard filed a narrowly focused response with the court.

The trust records spoke more clearly than online gossip.

Meanwhile, Nathan found a second recording in a company archive.

This one had been sent by Victor to Daniel with a message saying, Use the clean version.

The original ran almost four minutes.

Thomas said, "Daniel should have the house only if Margaret freely decides that is what she wants."

A moment later he said, "She comes first."

Victor's voice asked him to repeat the first phrase without the condition.

Thomas refused.

Then I heard my husband say something I had never known.

"I won't help you take away her choice."

A chair scraped.

The file ended with Thomas calling for a nurse.

I covered my mouth.

The truth did not bring him back.

But it gave me his voice without someone else's hands around it.

Richard prepared to submit the full file for authentication.

That same afternoon, Vanessa's attorney suddenly offered a settlement.

They would leave the house if I agreed to pay Daniel's debts.

The sum they wanted was $3.6 million.

May you like

And they demanded an answer before midnight.
