CHAPTER 3: THE WOMAN WHO KNEW EVERYTHING

The next morning, Olivia hired a private investigator.

Within forty-eight hours, they found the nurse.

Retired.

Living quietly in New Jersey.

Her name was Margaret Wells.

At first, the elderly woman refused to speak.

Then Olivia showed her the locket.

Margaret burst into tears.

"I prayed this day would come."

The room fell silent.

"What happened to my son?" Olivia asked.

Margaret's hands trembled.

"Your husband paid someone."

Olivia felt sick.

"He told us the second child was severely ill."

"He said he couldn't afford the treatment for two babies."

"He wanted only one."

Noah gasped.

The homeless boy lowered his head.

Margaret continued.

"Daniel arranged for the baby to be transferred through illegal channels. The records were altered. Everyone involved was paid."

Olivia couldn't breathe.

"You mean he sold my son?"

Margaret nodded.

The answer crushed her.

The boy's name was now Liam.

After being moved through several foster homes, he eventually ended up abandoned by people who only wanted government assistance payments.

By age eight, he was living on the streets.

Alone.

Hungry.

Forgotten.

Except Liam never stopped searching.

The locket had been the only thing left with him.

For years he visited libraries, shelters, and public records offices.

Piece by piece, he followed tiny clues.

Until they led him to Manhattan.

To Noah.

To his mother.

Olivia wrapped her arms around him.

For the first time in ten years, she held both of her sons together.

And nobody in the room could stop crying.

But one final mystery remained.
