CHAPTER 3 – “A New Beginning”

Outside, sirens faintly echoed in the distance.

But inside the bakery, time felt suspended.

The man removed his suit jacket and slowly placed it over the boy’s shoulders.

Not forceful.

Not dramatic.

Just warm fabric… and protection.

“You don’t trust me,” he said.

The boy didn’t answer.

“That’s fine,” the man continued. “You shouldn’t.”

He turned slightly toward the bakery worker.

“Call social services. Call whoever you want. But not tonight.”

The worker hesitated.

“…Why?”

The man looked at the boy.

“Because tonight, they don’t sleep on the street.”

A long pause.

Then slowly…

The boy looked down at the toddler.

Her breathing was small.

Fragile.

He closed his eyes for a moment.

Then nodded once.

May you like

Barely.

The first sign of surrender.
