PART 2: The Debt Vincent Moretti Never Forgot
PART 2: The Debt Vincent Moretti Never Forgot
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Emma still held Victoria Langford's wrist.
The shattered wineglass sparkled across the marble floor like scattered diamonds.
Then a deep voice cut through the silence.
"Let her go, Victoria."
The entire ballroom froze.
Vincent Moretti had stepped forward.
Tall.
Calm.
Terrifyingly composed.
Victoria immediately pulled her hand back.
"Vincent, this waitress assaulted me."
"No," Vincent replied evenly. "She stopped you from assaulting my mother."
A murmur spread through the crowd.
Victoria's face turned pale.
She hadn't realized who the elderly woman was.
Emma finally released her grip and stepped backward.
"I'm sorry," she said quickly. "I just didn't think anyone should be hit."
Vincent looked at her.
Most people avoided his gaze.
Emma met it for exactly one second before looking away.
That alone impressed him.
His mother reached for Emma's hand.
"Young lady, what is your name?"
"Emma Carter."
Isabella smiled warmly.
"Thank you, Emma."
The words seemed simple.
But everyone in the room knew something important had just happened.
Nobody defended Isabella Moretti.
Because nobody dared.
Yet this waitress had done it without hesitation.
The gala ended an hour later.
Emma expected to be fired.
Instead, she was summoned to a private dining room before leaving.
Vincent and Isabella were waiting.
Fear twisted inside her stomach.
Had she offended them somehow?
But Isabella surprised her.
"Sit with us."
Emma hesitated.
Then obeyed.
For the next thirty minutes, Isabella asked questions.
About her family.
Her work.
Her life.
Emma answered honestly.
For the first time in years, someone actually listened.
When she mentioned her father's stroke, Isabella's eyes softened.
When she mentioned the medical bills, Vincent became unusually quiet.
After Emma left, Isabella turned toward her son.
"She reminds me of your father."
Vincent nodded.
"I know."
"What are you going to do?"
Vincent stared at the empty chair Emma had occupied.
Then he said four words.
May you like
"Find out everything."
And within twenty-four hours, his team had.
