Chapter 3 – The Truth Hidden Behind a Hospital Bill

The next morning, Emma expected a termination letter.

Instead, the hotel's general manager called her into his office.

He looked unusually nervous.

"I'm afraid..."

He hesitated.

"...Mr. Moretti has requested to see you."

Emma felt her stomach tighten.

She assumed the worst.

A lawsuit.

A confidentiality agreement.

Anything.

A black luxury sedan waited outside.

Forty minutes later, she stood inside Moretti Tower overlooking the Chicago skyline.

Vincent waited alone.

Isabella sat beside the fireplace, smiling warmly.

"You came," Isabella said.

Emma nodded quietly.

"I wanted to apologize if yesterday caused trouble."

Vincent slid a folder across the desk.

She opened it.

Inside were copies of unpaid hospital invoices.

Medication statements.

Rehabilitation costs.

Every financial burden her family had struggled to hide.

Emma looked up in alarm.

"How did you—"

"My people investigated the woman who saved my mother's life."

His voice remained calm.

"They discovered someone who has spent years sacrificing everything for others."

Emma immediately pushed the folder back.

"I don't want charity."

Vincent almost smiled.

"I wasn't offering charity."

He placed another document beside it.

It was an employment contract.

Director of Community Programs for the Moretti Foundation.

The salary was nearly ten times what she earned as a waitress.

Full medical insurance.

Housing assistance.

Education support for her sister.

Emma stared at the pages in disbelief.

"I don't have the qualifications."

Isabella reached for her hand.

"Compassion cannot be taught."

Vincent nodded once.

"Integrity cannot be purchased."

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

"For years," Vincent continued, "people have donated millions to my foundation because it looks good in newspapers."

He paused.

"You protected a stranger when there was nothing to gain."

He looked directly into her eyes.

"That's the person I want representing it."

After a long silence...

Emma accepted.

Not because of the salary.

May you like

Because for the first time in years...

Someone had seen her.
