Chapter 2: Begging Comes Too Late
The next morning...
Every financial news channel carried the same headline.
HALE ENTERPRISES COLLAPSES AFTER VANGUARD HOLDINGS CALLS IN DEBT.
Banks withdrew support.
Investors fled.
Stock prices crashed.
Richard Hale watched nearly forty years of business disappear before lunch.
Then his phone rang.
"Daniel."
Richard almost shouted.
"Please!"
"We made a mistake!"
"I'll apologize publicly."
"My wife will apologize."
"Vanessa will apologize."
"We'll do anything."
Daniel remained quiet.
Finally he answered.
"You laughed while my father was humiliated."
Richard's breathing became uneven.
"I know..."
"I was wrong."
"No."
Daniel interrupted softly.
"You were honest."
"And honesty reveals character."
He ended the call.
Vanessa wasn't finished.
That evening she appeared outside Vanguard Tower.
Still wearing the engagement necklace.
Mascara stained her face.
She waited six hours.
When Daniel finally exited...
She ran toward him.
"I loved you!"
She cried.
"I didn't know who your father really was!"
Daniel looked at her calmly.
"Exactly."
She reached for him.
"I can change."
He slowly shook his head.
"If my father had remained a mechanic..."
"Would you still be here?"
Vanessa couldn't answer.
Her silence became the loudest confession of all.
May you like
Daniel walked away.
She never followed.
