Chapter 1: The Truth in Room 237

Maverick had barely managed to pull on his shirt when footsteps thundered down the hallway.
His parents arrived first.
Then his younger sister.
His godfather.
Two uncles.
Three cousins.
Within minutes, nearly everyone who had been waiting in the ballroom now stood crowded outside Room 237.
No one spoke.
Amy stepped aside without saying a word.
The open door revealed everything.
The tangled sheets.
The discarded tuxedo.
Penelope's lavender bridesmaid dress lying across the carpet.
Mrs. Bennett's knees nearly buckled.
"Maverick..."
Her voice cracked.
"What have you done?"
Maverick rushed forward.
"Mom, please... it isn't—"
"Don't."
His father cut him off with one word.
Cold.
Sharp.
The kind of voice that belonged to a man whose disappointment hurt more than anger.
Penelope covered her face.
"I never wanted this..."
Amy finally spoke.
"No."
"You wanted exactly this."
Silence swallowed the room.
Amy slowly removed the engagement ring from her finger.
The diamond caught the afternoon sunlight one last time.
She placed it carefully on the nightstand beside the hotel bed.
"I won't wear promises made by a liar."
Maverick stared at the ring as if watching his entire future disappear.
Then Aunt Rose stepped forward.
She looked directly at Penelope.
"When someone steals another woman's fiancé..."
"They never gain a husband."
"They inherit a cheater."
Not one person disagreed.
Penelope began crying.
Real tears this time.
But nobody comforted her.
Because everyone understood one painful truth.
She hadn't just betrayed Amy.
She had betrayed every memory they had built together over fifteen years.
Amy turned toward the door.
"I'm done."
For the first time all day...
She walked away without looking back.
