Chapter 2: The Bracelet's Secret
Chapter 2: The Bracelet's Secret
The bridal suite remained frozen.
No one dared to speak.
Richard Whitaker slowly stepped into the room, his polished shoes echoing against the marble floor.
His eyes never left Evelyn.
Marianne stared at the bracelet, then at the man she had trusted for thirty-one years.
"You lied to me," she whispered.
Richard closed his eyes.
"Yes."
The single word shattered what remained of their marriage.
Lily looked from her mother to Richard, then toward Ethan.
"What is happening?"
Evelyn swallowed hard.
"I never wanted you to find out like this."
Marianne laughed bitterly.
"So there was something to find out."
Richard finally looked at his son.
"Ethan..."
"I can explain."
"No," Ethan replied quietly.
"I think you've been explaining for years."
The silence became unbearable.
Richard loosened his tie.
"It started twenty-eight years ago."
Everyone looked at him.
"Your mother and I were separated for almost a year."
Marianne's head snapped toward him.
"We were never divorced."
"I know."
"But we weren't together."
He turned toward Evelyn.
"I met Evelyn during that time."
Evelyn lowered her eyes.
"We thought it would only be temporary."
"It wasn't."
Lily felt her knees weaken.
"You..."
"You two had an affair?"
Evelyn nodded, tears sliding silently down her cheeks.
"It ended before either of you children were old enough to remember."
Marianne's voice became dangerously calm.
"Then why did she have my bracelet?"
Richard reached into his pocket and removed a faded envelope.
"I gave it to her six months ago."
Everyone stared.
"It wasn't a love gift."
He carefully opened the envelope.
Inside were medical reports.
Evelyn looked horrified.
"Richard..."
"No more lies."
He handed the papers to Lily.
She scanned the first page.
Then her face turned white.
Advanced heart failure.
Patient: Evelyn Moore.
Richard continued quietly.
"She called me after twenty-seven years because she was dying."
"I helped pay for her treatments."
"The bracelet..."
"...was the only valuable thing I had with me that day."
"I promised I'd replace it before Marianne ever noticed."
Marianne stared at him in disbelief.
"You stole from your own wife..."
"...to help your former lover."
Richard nodded.
"I did."
"And I'll regret that until the day I die."
No one noticed Ethan quietly taking Lily's trembling hand.
Not because of the affair.
Because suddenly...
Both of them realized they were paying for sins they had never committed.
