Chapter 12 - THE MISSING HOUR

Ethan had visited the hospital that night.

That was the detail he could not reconcile.

He remembered arriving at 5:37 p.m.

He remembered a doctor taking him into a private room.

He remembered hearing that Laura had died before emergency crews could save her.

He remembered asking to see her.

He remembered being told her injuries were too severe.

He remembered signing papers without understanding any of them.

Now investigators held an ambulance report stating Laura arrived alive.

“How alive?”

Ethan asked.

The investigator checked.

“Pulse present.”

“Blood pressure low.”

“Responsive intermittently.”

Ethan’s throat tightened.

“Did she speak?”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

The investigator read.

“Patient repeatedly asked for husband.”

Ethan sat down.

The room blurred.

Laura had reached the hospital alive.

She had asked for him.

He had been in the same building.

And someone told him she was already dead.

Chloe stood beside Rachel.

Ethan had insisted she be taken home after the hotel rescue.

But she refused to leave him entirely.

She now watched his face.

He tried to control it.

Failed.

Agent Ward approached.

“We’re pulling full hospital records.”

“Now.”

“We are.”

“Who pronounced her dead?”

“Dr. Harold Bennett.”

Ethan knew the name.

Bennett had been his father’s personal physician.

He had also been on the board of the private hospital.

Ethan’s stomach turned.

“Where is he?”

“Retired.”

“Florida.”

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Talk to him.”

Agent Ward nodded.

Noah reviewed Charles’s confession.

The statement described hiring Peter Lawson to cause a minor mechanical problem.

Charles claimed he wanted Laura’s car to break down before she reached Stamford.

He wanted time to destroy records and confront her.

He insisted he did not order a fatal sabotage.

Peter Lawson apparently loosened the brake fitting more than intended.

Or Charles claimed he did.

But that still did not explain the hospital.

Then Noah found another line.

HB agreed to manage the situation.

Ethan pointed.

“HB.”

“Harold Bennett.”

Noah nodded grimly.

It seemed likely.

By dawn, federal agents had confirmed something extraordinary.

Laura arrived at St. Catherine Medical Center at 4:59 p.m.

She was taken into emergency surgery.

At 5:26, her condition briefly stabilized.

At 5:31, Dr. Bennett entered the operating suite.

At 5:39, Laura was pronounced dead.

Ethan had arrived at 5:37.

Two minutes before.

The official record given to Ethan listed death at 4:42.

Before arrival.

Someone altered it.

Ethan’s anger became almost impossible to contain.

“What happened between 5:31 and 5:39?”

Agent Ward looked at him.

“We don’t know yet.”

“Then find out.”

Bennett was located that afternoon.

He initially refused to speak.

Then investigators served him with a subpoena.

Ethan wanted to confront him personally.

They would not allow it.

Instead, Agent Ward returned with the interview summary.

Bennett admitted Charles called him before Laura arrived.

Charles said Laura had been in an accident.

He asked Bennett to keep the situation private.

That alone was strange.

How had Charles known so quickly?

Marcus had not called Evelyn until after the crash.

Maybe Charles was already monitoring Laura.

Bennett denied harming her.

He claimed Laura suffered internal bleeding that could not be controlled.

Then investigators confronted him with anesthesia logs.

A medication dose had been entered manually.

Far above the normal amount.

Bennett asked for an attorney.

Ethan understood.

His father had not merely tried to stop Laura from reaching authorities.

He may have ensured she never spoke at all.

That night, Ethan sat on Chloe’s bed.

She held the old music box.

“Did Grandpa hurt Mommy?”

Ethan closed his eyes.

He had hoped to spare her.

But too many adults had already hidden too much.

“I think Grandpa made choices that helped cause what happened.”

Chloe looked at the music box.

“Did he love me?”

Ethan’s heart cracked.

“Yes.”

“How can he love me if he hurt Mommy?”

Ethan struggled.

“People can love someone and still do terrible things.”

“That doesn’t make the terrible thing smaller.”

“No.”

“It doesn’t.”

Chloe was quiet.

Then she asked.

“Did Mommy know you were coming?”

“I think she hoped I would.”

“She asked for me.”

Chloe leaned against him.

Ethan held her.

Neither spoke for several minutes.

The next morning, Vanessa requested to see Ethan.

He almost refused.

Then she sent a message.

I know where Marcus is going.

Ethan met her at Noah’s office with Agent Ward present.

Vanessa looked tired.

“What do you know?”

“He has a storage property in Rhode Island.”

“How?”

“I went there once.”

“When?”

“Last year.”

“Why?”

“He stored documents.”

“Address?”

Vanessa gave it.

Agents were dispatched.

Ethan studied her.

“Why help now?”

Vanessa looked down.

“Because I finally understand what I became.”

“That sounds convenient.”

“I know.”

“You wrote that note to Chloe.”

“Yes.”

“You planned to send her away.”

“Yes.”

“You helped Marcus manipulate me.”

“Yes.”

Vanessa’s voice shook.

“I cannot undo any of it.”

“Then why should I care that you feel bad?”

“You shouldn’t.”

The answer surprised him.

Vanessa looked up.

“I’m not asking you to forgive me.”

“I’m trying to stop him.”

Ethan said nothing.

Agent Ward received a call.

The Rhode Island property was empty.

But agents found recent activity.

Maps.

Cash.

Fake identification.

And photographs.

Dozens.

Ethan.

Chloe.

Rachel.

Noah.

Evelyn.

Vanessa.

Marcus had surveilled all of them.

One photograph showed Chloe’s school.

Another showed Rachel’s house.

Another showed the cemetery where Laura was buried.

On the back, Marcus had written a date.

Tomorrow.

Ethan’s blood chilled.

“What’s tomorrow?”

Noah checked the calendar.

“August seventeenth.”

Ethan knew immediately.

Laura’s birthday.

Every year Ethan took Chloe to the cemetery on Laura’s birthday.

Marcus knew.

Agent Ward doubled security.

They assumed Marcus planned to meet or intercept Ethan there.

The next morning, Ethan considered not going.

Chloe insisted.

“Mommy shouldn’t lose her birthday because Marcus is bad.”

Ethan could not argue.

They arrived with agents positioned discreetly around the cemetery.

Flowers in hand.

Chloe knelt beside Laura’s stone.

“Happy birthday, Mommy.”

Ethan stood behind her.

Minutes passed.

No Marcus.

Then Chloe noticed something.

“There’s a new flower.”

A single white rose lay behind the headstone.

Attached was a key.

Ethan picked it up.

A number was etched into the metal.

Agent Ward searched the area.

No one.

Then Noah noticed writing on the back of Laura’s headstone.

Fresh chalk.

SHE WASN’T THE ONLY ONE CHARLES SILENCED.

Ethan stared.

Below it was an address.

Cole Harbor Cemetery Archive.

Locker 39.

The archive building sat fifty yards away.

Agents opened the locker.

Inside was an old newspaper clipping.

Peter Lawson.

Missing Automotive Technician.

And beneath it was a recent photograph.

Peter Lawson alive.

Standing beside Marcus.

The photograph was dated three days earlier.

Agent Ward whispered.

“Marcus found him.”

Ethan looked at the image.

On the back, Marcus had written.

He finally remembered who was in the hospital.

Ethan’s pulse spiked.

Peter Lawson had apparently seen something five years ago.

Something involving Laura.

Then Ethan’s phone rang.

Marcus.

Ethan answered.

“Where are you?”

Marcus ignored the question.

“You want to know what happened during the missing eight minutes?”

“Yes.”

“Find Peter.”

“Where?”

“I’ll tell you.”

“What do you want?”

“Charles’s contract.”

“The original one from Room 318.”

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“You’re still obsessed with the company.”

“No.”

Marcus’s voice changed.

“I’m obsessed with the truth.”

Ethan almost ended the call.

Then Marcus said.

“Peter saw the person who entered Laura’s operating room after Bennett.”

Ethan froze.

“Who?”

Marcus whispered.

“Someone you still trust.”

The line went dead.

Ethan slowly lowered the phone.

May you like

For the first time, the conspiracy was no longer only about dead men and fugitives.

Someone still inside Ethan’s life may have been present when Laura died.
