Chapter 2 – The Last Page
Chapter 2 – The Last Page
The silence inside the church became unbearable.
No one moved.
No one even dared to breathe.
The groom's eyes remained fixed on the official documents lying in front of Mariana.
His mother was the first to break the silence.
"There has to be some mistake," she said, forcing a nervous laugh. "That girl's father died with nothing."
The bank representative calmly adjusted his glasses.
"There is no mistake."
He slid the final page across the altar.
"This is the court order confirming that Mr. Alejandro Vargas concealed ownership of seven companies for over twenty years while protecting his daughter from individuals who wanted his fortune."
Gasps echoed throughout the church.
Mariana's hands trembled again.
Not from fear.
From disbelief.
"My father..." she whispered.
The representative nodded respectfully.
"He knew he was dying."
"He instructed us to reveal everything only on your wedding day."
The groom's face turned white.
His father suddenly stood from the front row.
"No..."
His voice cracked.
"It can't be Alejandro Vargas."
The representative looked directly at him.
"It is."
"And according to these records..."
"...your construction company illegally acquired three of Mr. Vargas's businesses using forged contracts after his disappearance."
The church exploded into whispers.
Several guests instinctively stepped away from the groom's family.
The representative continued.
"The authorities have already frozen every company account belonging to the Delgado family."
"The investigation begins today."
The groom stared helplessly at his father.
"Dad..."
His father couldn't answer.
Because he already knew.
Everything was true.
For years, he had believed the past would stay buried forever.
Instead...
It had arrived at his son's wedding.
Mariana slowly closed the folder.
Then she quietly removed her engagement ring.
She placed it on the altar.
"I thought today would be the day I became your wife."
She looked calmly into the groom's eyes.
"But instead..."
"...it's the day I finally became my father's daughter."
Without another word...
She walked away.
May you like
And for the first time in years...
She walked with her head held high.
