Chapter 2 – The Truth Behind the Engagement

The old man walked straight past Daniel.
He never acknowledged him.
Instead, he stopped in front of Emily.
"My dear," he said softly, noticing the torn gown.
"Did they hurt you?"
Emily smiled for the first time that day.
"I'm alright."
The old man's expression hardened.
"I am not."
He turned toward Daniel.
"You spent three years pretending to love my granddaughter."
Daniel tried to recover.
"Sir... there's been a misunderstanding."
The old man nodded to one of his attorneys.
A projector illuminated the ballroom wall.
Email after email appeared.
Private bank transfers.
Secret messages.
Hidden agreements.
Daniel and his parents had carefully planned the marriage—not for love, but to gain control of Carter Holdings through Emily.
The guests watched in stunned silence.
Daniel's mother began shaking.
His father lowered his head.
Daniel stepped backward.
"This... this was stolen!"
"No," the attorney replied calmly.
"It was legally preserved."
Emily looked directly at Daniel.
"You never noticed the clauses I insisted on."
Daniel's heartbeat quickened.
"What clauses?"
Arthur quietly placed a thick folder on the table.
"The prenuptial agreement."

Daniel suddenly remembered.
He had never bothered reading it.
