CHAPTER 2: THE GIRL NOBODY NOTICED

CHAPTER 2: THE GIRL NOBODY NOTICED
The rest of the flight passed in a strange silence.
Not because Sophie cried again.
She didn't.
She remained peacefully asleep in Lila's arms for nearly two hours.
Daniel couldn't stop watching.
At first, he thought she was simply good with babies.
Then he noticed the notebook.
Pages filled with equations.
Advanced calculus.
Physics formulas.
Computer algorithms.
Things most adults couldn't understand.
"You like math?" Daniel finally asked.
Lila smiled.
"I love it."
Daniel flipped through several pages.
His eyebrows rose.
These weren't school assignments.
These were original solutions.
Research-level work.
"Where do you study?"
Lila hesitated.
Then looked out the window.
"I don't."
Daniel frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"I had to leave school last year."
The answer stunned him.
A girl this brilliant should have been attending the best schools in the country.
Instead she sat in economy class with worn shoes and a backpack held together by tape.
"Why?"
"My mom got sick."
The words were simple.
But the pain behind them wasn't.
Lila explained that her mother worked two jobs before developing kidney failure.
Medical bills consumed everything.
College became impossible.
Every dream had been placed on hold.
Daniel felt a knot form in his chest.
For the first time in years, a business deal didn't seem important.
A stock price didn't matter.
Because sitting across from him was one of the smartest people he had ever met.
And she was being left behind by life.
When the plane landed in London, Daniel handed her a business card.
"If you ever need anything, call me."
Lila looked at the card.
May you like
Then slipped it into her pocket.
Neither of them realized that would be the beginning of everything.
