Chapter 3: Lily Finally Speaks
Forty-eight hours later...
Lily opened her eyes.
Emma immediately squeezed her tiny hand.
"You don't have to talk."
"But if you remember anything..."
Lily blinked slowly.
Then whispered,
"Grandma said..."
Everyone leaned closer.
"...I ruined the party."
Tears streamed down Emma's face.
Lily continued between weak breaths.
"Aunt Vanessa told me to climb inside..."
"...because my birthday surprise was waiting."
The hospital room became completely silent.
Then Lily added the words that shattered Marcus forever.
"I cried."
"I said it was dark."
"They closed the lid anyway."
Marcus buried his face in his hands.
He had spent years believing his parents could be difficult.
He never imagined they could become monsters.
