CHAPTER 2 — THE FILES THAT SHOULD NEVER HAVE EXISTED

The ballroom remained frozen as the elderly attorney stepped forward.

His name was Arthur Whitmore.

For over thirty years, he had served the family as legal counsel.

And for twelve years, he had lived with a secret that haunted him every night.

Sophia still held the boy tightly.

"What do you know about my sister?" she demanded.

Arthur's hands trembled as he opened one of the thick files.

Inside were photographs.

Old photographs.

Photographs of Lena.

The guests gasped.

For twelve years, everyone had believed Lena abandoned the family.

But the pictures told a different story.

Lena had not run away.

She had been hidden.

Moved from city to city.

Watched.

Controlled.

Silenced.

Sophia stared at the evidence in disbelief.

"Who did this?"

Arthur lowered his eyes.

Before he could answer, a familiar voice echoed through the ballroom.

"You should stop digging."

The crowd turned.

Standing at the top of the staircase was Victor Ashford.

Sophia's father.

The billionaire patriarch.

The man everyone respected.

And feared.

The little boy immediately tightened his grip around Sophia.

Arthur's face turned pale.

Because Victor Ashford was the reason Lena disappeared.

Twelve years ago Lena discovered documents proving that Victor had stolen millions from charitable foundations meant to help disabled children.

When she threatened to expose him, he made her disappear.

Not by violence.

By destroying her reputation.

He convinced the world she was unstable.

Then forced her into hiding where no one would believe her.

Sophia felt sick.

Everything she had believed about her father shattered in seconds.

Victor remained calm.

"You're all being manipulated."

Arthur shook his head.

"No, Victor. Not anymore."

He lifted the final document.

A signed confession.

One Victor never knew existed.

The ballroom erupted with whispers.

For the first time in his life...

Victor Ashford looked afraid.
