CHAPTER 2 — THE SECRET BEHIND THE HOSPITAL DOORS

Michael felt the blood drain from his face.

"The girl isn't just my granddaughter."

His father's words echoed in his mind.

For a moment, he couldn't breathe.

"What are you saying?" Michael whispered.

The old man lowered his eyes.

"Her name is Emily."

The emergency room doors swung shut behind the nurses.

Michael stared at him.

The old man continued.

"Six years ago, after you left town and stopped answering our calls, Sarah found out she was pregnant."

Michael froze.

Sarah.

The woman he had loved before medical school.

The woman he believed had abandoned him.

His father's voice trembled.

"She never left you, son."

Michael's chest tightened.

"What?"

"Your letters never reached her. Her messages never reached you. Someone made sure of that."

A thousand memories crashed into him.

Sarah crying at the bus station.

The promise they made.

The silence that followed.

Michael had spent years believing she chose another life.

The old man shook his head.

"She waited for you until the day Emily was born."

Michael's knees nearly gave out.

His voice cracked.

"Emily is... my daughter?"

Tears rolled down the old man's face.

"Yes."

The world stopped.

At that exact moment, a nurse rushed out of the emergency room.

"Doctor Michael!"

He turned immediately.

"The child's condition is critical."

Without another word, Michael ran.

Not as a doctor.

As a father.
