Chapter 2: The Truth Behind the Smile

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The ballroom stood frozen beneath the crystal chandeliers.

Emily's wedding ring remained on the table between them.

A tiny circle of gold.

A symbol of promises that had just died.

Daniel stared at it as if touching it might somehow undo what had happened.

"Emily..."

His voice cracked.

For the first time in years, he looked completely helpless.

But Emily no longer recognized the man standing in front of her.

The man she loved would never have laughed while planning to abandon his pregnant wife.

The man she trusted would never have wrapped his arm around another woman.

"Don't," she whispered.

The single word stopped him cold.

Sophia crossed her arms and stepped closer.

"Maybe everyone deserves to hear the whole story."

Several guests exchanged nervous glances.

Daniel immediately turned toward her.

"Be quiet."

But Sophia only smiled.

A cruel smile.

"No. I'm tired of being your secret."

The room erupted into whispers.

Emily felt another piece of her heart break.

Then Sophia delivered the final blow.

"We've been together for almost two years."

Gasps echoed throughout the ballroom.

Emily's hand instinctively moved to her stomach.

Two years.

Almost half of her marriage.

Every business trip.

Every late-night meeting.

Every excuse.

Suddenly they all made sense.

Daniel reached for Emily.

She stepped back.

"You lied to me every day."

Tears finally rolled down her cheeks.

Not because she loved him anymore.

But because she realized she never truly knew him.

Then, without another word, she picked up her gift box.

Turned around.

And walked out of the ballroom forever.

Behind her, Daniel called her name.

She never looked back.

Outside, heavy rain had begun to fall.

And for the first time in years, Emily felt completely alone.
