Chapter 1: The First Word
The engagement party came to a sudden halt.
The room fell silent as little Emily pointed at the new housekeeper and whispered, "Mommy."
Everyone froze.
For seven years, Emily had never spoken a single word. Doctors had called her condition psychological mutism, brought on by the trauma of losing her mother shortly after birth.
The wealthy businessman, Richard Harrison, stared in disbelief.
"What did you say, sweetheart?" he asked.
Emily ran into the housekeeper's arms and repeated, louder this time, "Mommy."
The woman, whose name was Sarah, turned pale. Tears instantly filled her eyes.
Richard noticed something strange. Sarah wasn't surprised.
She looked terrified.
After the guests were escorted out, Richard demanded answers.
Sarah finally revealed a secret she had buried for years.
Seven years ago, she had worked as a nurse in the hospital where Emily was born.
On the night of the delivery, a fire broke out in one wing of the building. During the chaos, several newborn records were accidentally switched.
Sarah had always suspected that Emily wasn't actually Richard's biological daughter.
