Chapter 1: The DNA That Destroyed an Empire
The silence inside the Grand Plaza Hotel lasted only a few seconds.
Then chaos erupted.
Reporters surged forward.
Guests pulled out their phones.
Board members whispered frantically as security guards looked at one another, suddenly uncertain whose orders they were supposed to obey.
"Nobody moves."
The deep voice came from the ballroom entrance.
Every head turned.
A silver-haired man wearing a tailored black suit walked inside, followed by two detectives and a woman carrying a locked aluminum briefcase.
He introduced himself calmly.
"My name is Samuel Grant."
"I'm the lead investigator assigned to a complaint filed five years ago concerning the disappearance of a newborn from St. Catherine's Hospital."
Clara stared at him in disbelief.
"You... never gave up?"
Samuel nodded.
"I promised your father I wouldn't."
Eleanor's breathing became uneven.
"You have no jurisdiction here," she snapped.
"This is a private event."
Samuel ignored her.
Instead, he placed several documents onto the nearest table.
"Five years ago, hospital surveillance footage mysteriously disappeared."
"The attending physician resigned the next morning."
"Three neonatal nurses accepted unusually large financial transfers before leaving the country."
Gasps echoed throughout the ballroom.
Samuel opened the aluminum case.
Inside were sealed DNA testing kits.
"We anticipated this day."
"If Mrs. Vance insists this child belongs to her family..."
"...we can settle the truth tonight."
Leo looked up at Clara.
"Does that mean..."
"...you're really my mommy?"
Clara gently touched his face.
"I've always been your mommy."
"I just wasn't allowed to find you."
Leo wrapped his tiny fingers around hers.
"I'm not letting go again."
The DNA samples were collected immediately.
Eleanor suddenly lunged forward.
"No!"
She tried to knock the evidence onto the floor.
One detective caught her wrist before she could reach it.
That single desperate act spoke louder than any accusation.
Every camera in the ballroom captured it.
