CHAPTER 1: THE CALL THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

CHAPTER 1: THE CALL THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
The muddy hillside fell silent.
No one laughed anymore.
Ryan stared at Emily's phone as the deep voice echoed through the speaker.
“Emily... who did this to you?”
The confidence vanished from his face.
The other teenagers slowly lowered their phones.
One girl quietly deleted her recording.
Another stepped backward.
But it was too late.
Every second had already been captured.
Emily wiped mud from her cheek.
Her voice remained calm.
“Dad, they're still here.”
A brief silence followed.
Then Chief Daniel Carter spoke again.
“Don't move. Officers are already on the way.”
Ryan's stomach dropped.
“How... how does she know the Chief?” one boy whispered.
Nobody answered.
Because everyone suddenly knew.
The most powerful law enforcement officer in the city wasn't just hearing about the attack.
He was hearing it directly from his daughter.
Less than three minutes later, police sirens echoed across the park.
Two patrol cars arrived.
Then a black SUV.
The door opened.
Chief Carter stepped out.
His expression was terrifyingly calm.
He walked straight toward Emily.
Ignoring everyone else.
Ignoring the cameras.
Ignoring the excuses already forming in Ryan's head.
He knelt beside his daughter and gently brushed the mud from her shoulder.
“Are you hurt?”
Emily shook her head.
“No, Dad.”
Then she pointed.
At Ryan.
The boy who pushed her.
And for the first time that day...
Ryan looked scared.
Really scared.
