Chapter 17 - ELENA’S FIRST LIE
Adrian did not confront Elena immediately.
He distrusted every word Margaret spoke.
The claim might be another attempt to divide them.
Still, Hale’s missing file existed.
Investigators found references to it in Richard’s archive.
ELENA MARSH - INITIAL CONTACT.
Elena’s maiden name was Marsh.
She met Adrian five years earlier at a charity auction.
She worked as an architectural preservation consultant.
Whitmore Global had planned to demolish a historic theater.
Elena publicly challenged Adrian during the auction.
Their argument became a newspaper story.
He invited her to present an alternative plan.
Six months later, they were dating.
Two years later, they married.
Adrian had always considered the meeting unlikely but fortunate.
Now he wondered whether it had been arranged.
Ruiz searched Hale’s seized accounts.
A payment from his private foundation had been made to Elena’s consulting firm six months before the auction.
The amount was twenty-five thousand dollars.
Adrian felt physically ill.
He asked Marcus to obtain the full contract.
It funded research into historic properties owned by Whitmore Global.
Elena had never mentioned it.
Adrian returned to her room.
Richard Gabriel had graduated from assisted breathing to a smaller oxygen tube.
Elena sat beside the incubator reading softly to him.
Adrian watched from the doorway.
He remembered her bruises.
Her courage.
Her refusal to let him become consumed by revenge.
Those things were real.
Whatever happened before they met could not erase everything after.
He entered.
Elena looked at his face.
“What did Margaret tell you?”
Adrian stopped.
“How did you know?”
“She looked at me during the naming ceremony.”
“She had the expression she wears when she has chosen a new place to cut.”
Adrian closed the door.
“Did Jonathan Hale pay you before we met?”
Elena became still.
“Yes.”
The honesty hurt more than denial might have.
“What for?”
“To investigate Whitmore properties.”
“Why did you never tell me?”
“Because the contract required confidentiality.”
“Even after we married?”
“The project ended before the auction.”
“Was our meeting arranged?”
Elena looked toward the baby.
“I knew you would be there.”
Adrian felt the room change around him.
“Did Hale send you?”
“No.”
“He invited my firm to prepare a preservation proposal.”
“He said public pressure was the only way to make you listen.”
“So you challenged me deliberately.”
“Yes.”
“Did you plan to date me?”
“No.”
“Did you know who I was?”
“Of course.”
“Did you know about my birth?”
“No.”
“The trust?”
“No.”
“Margaret?”
“I knew she controlled the foundation.”
“I did not know what she had done.”
Adrian sat down.
“Why hide the payment?”
“Because after we became involved, I was ashamed.”
“I worried you would believe I used you.”
“Did you?”
Elena’s eyes filled with tears.
“I used the opportunity to save a theater.”
“I did not use your feelings.”
Adrian wanted to believe her.
Then she added something he did not expect.
“Hale contacted me again after Richard died.”
Adrian looked up.
“What did he want?”
“He asked me to become pregnant.”
Silence filled the room.
Adrian stood.
“What?”
“He said Richard’s trust required a child.”
“He said Margaret would never release control until there was an heir.”
“You knew about the trust.”
“Not the details.”
“You just said you did not.”
“I did not know about the bloodlines or the accounts.”
“I knew a pregnancy could shift authority.”
“Did you stop taking birth control because Hale asked you?”
Elena looked away.
Adrian felt betrayed in a way he had not prepared for.
Their pregnancy had been discussed.
They both wanted children.
They had agreed to wait until the acquisition was complete.
Then Elena became pregnant unexpectedly.
Adrian remembered her surprise.
Her tears.
Her fear that he would think the timing was wrong.
“Was it an accident?” he asked.
Elena did not answer quickly enough.
Adrian stepped back.
“You lied to me.”
“I was afraid Margaret would destroy the evidence if we waited.”
“You made a decision about our child without me.”
“I know.”
“You decided the pregnancy would activate the trust.”
“I believed Richard created it to remove her.”
“You used our baby as part of Hale’s plan.”
“No.”
“I chose to have the child I already wanted.”
“You chose the timing because a man manipulating my family told you to.”
Elena began crying.
“I thought I was protecting you.”
Adrian laughed once without humor.
“Everyone says that.”
The sentence struck them both.
Elena had repeated the same justification as Celeste, Anne, Richard, and Hale.
She had taken away Adrian’s choice because she believed the outcome mattered more than the truth.
“I did not know Margaret would target the baby,” Elena said.
“I believed the trust would remove her legally.”
“You could have told me.”
“You defended her every time I questioned the foundation.”
“I would have listened.”
“You did not listen before.”
The accusation was true.
Adrian had dismissed Elena’s concerns about Margaret for years.
He called them personality conflicts.
He told Elena to be patient.
He expected her to absorb insults to preserve peace.
His failure did not justify her lie.
It explained her fear.
“I need time,” he said.
Elena nodded.
He left the room.
In the hallway, Sophia waited.
She had overheard part of the conversation.
“Margaret wanted you to discover this now,” she said.
“That does not make it false.”
“No.”
“But ask why she waited.”
Adrian looked toward the secure unit where Margaret remained.
“She wants me isolated.”
“She wants you to punish Elena before you understand Hale’s role.”
“Did Hale manipulate her?”
“Probably.”
“Did Elena still choose to lie?”
“Yes.”
Sophia’s answer was direct.
“You can love someone and still hold them responsible.”
“You can also remain hurt without letting Margaret decide what the hurt means.”
Adrian spent the night in the hospital chapel.
At dawn, Ruiz brought him news.
Investigators recovered Hale’s missing file from a hidden server.
It contained recordings of his meetings with Elena.
In the first, Hale encouraged her to pressure Adrian publicly.
In the second, he explained that a child would weaken Margaret.
In the third, Elena refused his money and ordered him never to contact her again.
The date of the third recording was two months before she became pregnant.
Elena had not followed Hale’s instruction directly.
But she had learned about the trust trigger and made her own decision.
The final page contained a note written by Hale.
ELENA IS UNCONTROLLABLE.
IF SHE CONCEIVES, MARGARET WILL MOVE.
PREPARE OBSERVATION.
Hale expected Margaret to attack.
He used Elena’s choices to set the trap.
Adrian returned to her room.
Before he could speak, an alarm sounded from the neonatal unit.
A nurse rushed inside.
Richard Gabriel’s heart rate had dropped.
Doctors surrounded the incubator.
Elena tried to stand despite her surgical wound.
Adrian caught her.
“What is happening?” she cried.
Dr. Perez examined the baby’s chart.
Then she looked toward the medication line.
“Someone changed his infusion.”
A clear bag hung beside the incubator.
The label appeared correct.
The contents were not.
Margaret was still under guard.
Hale was in custody.
Avery was in federal detention.
Yet someone had reached their child.
On the floor beneath the medication stand lay a small card.
