CHAPTER 3 — THE CHOICE

Esteban landed hard outside the hospital.

Pain shot through his arm, but he stood.

And saw it.

A black car.

Door open.

Sophie inside.

And beside her—the man in control of everything.

Waiting.

“Choose,” the man said calmly.

“Her… or the truth about your father.”

Esteban stepped forward.

“I don’t choose,” he said.

“I end this.”

The man studied him for a moment.

Then smiled faintly.

“You are still just a boy trying to fight a system you don’t understand.”

Esteban looked at Sophie.

Then at the hospital.

Then at the man.

“I understand enough,” he said quietly.

“That you built your power on people who never got to choose.”

Sophie pressed her small hands against the glass.

“Daddy,” she whispered.

“I remember you.”

That broke something in the air.

The man turned slightly—just for a second.

And in that second—

Esteban moved.

Not to escape.

Not to surrender.

But to take everything back.

ENDING

The truth came out weeks later.

The empire collapsed quietly.

No headlines explained it fully.

No official statement survived intact.

But what remained was this:

a man who disappeared from power…

a woman who survived what should have destroyed her…

and a little girl who stopped being a secret.

Years later, in a small home far from the city, Sophie ran barefoot through the rain, laughing.

Esteban stood by the door watching her.

Yohandra sat beside him.

No guards.

No fear.

Just silence.

Peace.

Sophie looked back and asked:

“Was it worth everything?”

Esteban looked at her.

Then at Yohandra.

And smiled faintly.

“Yes,” he said.

May you like

“Because I didn’t choose between love and truth.”

“I chose to protect both.”
