CHAPTER 4 — BEFORE MIDNIGHT

The ballroom emptied within minutes.

Television cameras gathered outside the hotel.

Breaking news alerts spread across every major network.

Whitmore Financial stock collapsed before markets even opened overseas.

Investors withdrew.

Banks froze company assets.

Charity partners publicly severed ties.

The Whitmore empire fell apart faster than anyone believed possible.

Daniel sat alone inside the abandoned chapel.

Still wearing his tuxedo.

Still holding the note that had started everything.

When Maya entered, he didn't look up.

"You knew."

She nodded.

"I learned the truth six months ago."

"You could have warned me."

"I tried."

He remembered every conversation she had started.

Every time she begged him to investigate his mother's business.

Every time he had answered...

"She's just protective."

He buried his face in his hands.

"I chose her."

"You chose comfort."

Silence settled between them.

Finally, Daniel removed his wedding ring.

He had never actually placed it on Maya's finger.

He set it gently on the altar.

"I'm sorry."

"So am I."

Not because the wedding ended.

But because it had taken the destruction of an empire for the truth to matter.

Outside...

Police escorted Eleanor Whitmore into a waiting vehicle.

She looked toward the chapel one last time.

Maya met her gaze through the stained glass doors.

Neither woman smiled.

Neither spoke.

There was nothing left to say.

Just before midnight...

The Whitmore name disappeared from the stock exchange.

By sunrise...

The company filed for emergency bankruptcy protection.

Months later, Maya returned to the small cemetery where her mother rested.

She placed a single white rose on the headstone.

"I didn't wear the perfect dress, Mom."

She smiled softly.

"But I walked away with something better."

"The truth."

A gentle breeze carried away the last of the wedding veil.

And for the first time in years...

Maya finally felt free.
