PART 3 – THE BRIDE'S FINAL SECRET

Security guards moved toward Sophia.
But she suddenly laughed.
The sound chilled everyone.
"You still don't understand."
Ethan stared at her.
"Understand what?"
Sophia slowly wiped tears from her face.
"My father didn't order Daniel's death."
The room fell silent.
Anna froze.
"What?"
Sophia looked directly at her.
"My father wanted Daniel bribed."
She pointed at herself.
"I killed him."
The confession hit harder than anything before.
Anna's breathing stopped.
Ethan couldn't speak.
Sophia continued.
"I was twenty-two. Daniel threatened to go to the police. Everything my family owned would have disappeared."
Her voice shook.
"So I followed him that night."
Tears filled her eyes.
"He trusted me."
The room became unbearably quiet.
"I cut the brake line on his truck."
Anna's hand covered her mouth.
The years of grief.
The years of searching.
The years of unanswered questions.
All leading to this moment.
Sophia collapsed into a chair.
"But that's not the worst thing."
Ethan stared at her.
"What could possibly be worse?"
Sophia slowly looked at Anna.
Then she whispered:
"Your father wasn't the only victim."
Anna frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
Sophia closed her eyes.
"The woman who died trying to save him..."
Anna's heart pounded.
"...was your mother."
The world seemed to stop.
Anna had spent her entire life believing her mother abandoned her before she was old enough to remember.
But it wasn't true.
Her mother had died trying to stop the murder.
Sophia broke down.
"For fifteen years I convinced myself I did it for my family."
She looked at Anna.
"But every night I saw their faces."

Police sirens suddenly echoed outside the ballroom.
The end of the lie had finally arrived.
