CHAPTER 2 — THE GIRL WHO NEVER DIED

No one in the ballroom dared to speak.
Ethan slowly stepped away from his fiancée.
His polished shoes echoed across the marble floor until he stopped only inches from Lily.
His voice trembled.
"You... survived."
Lily's lips quivered into a fragile smile.
"So did you."
For a long moment, neither of them moved.
Then Ethan reached into the inside pocket of his tuxedo.
From a worn leather wallet, he carefully unfolded a tiny paper crane.
Its edges had yellowed with age.
"I've carried this every day since I was twelve."
Lily gasped.
With shaking fingers, she opened her delivery bag.
Inside was another paper crane, carefully protected inside a small plastic envelope.
"I kept mine too."
A collective gasp swept through the guests.
Sophia watched in stunned silence.
She suddenly understood why Ethan had never fully opened his heart.
He hadn't been waiting for someone better.
He had been waiting for someone he believed was gone forever.
Ethan swallowed hard.
"They told me you died."
Lily lowered her eyes.
"They told me you never came back."
Silence settled between them.
Then Lily finally revealed the truth.
The night before her final surgery, complications forced her family to transfer her to another children's hospital across the country.
The hospital's records were mixed up after a fire destroyed part of the pediatric archives.
A nurse mistakenly informed Ethan's parents that Lily had passed away.
At the same time, Lily's parents were told Ethan's family had moved overseas and wanted no further contact.
Two children had been separated...
By one tragic mistake.
Not by choice.
Not by death.
By paperwork.
Ethan covered his face with trembling hands.
"I searched for your name for twenty years."
"So did I," Lily whispered.
"But every search ended with nothing."
Tears filled their eyes.
Not loud tears.
The quiet kind that only appear after decades of carrying grief alone.
