Chapter 3 – A Mother's Goodbye

Inside the little house, old photographs covered the walls.

Lucas fishing.

Lucas graduating middle school.

Lucas laughing beside Eleanor and her late husband.

Every picture represented a life...

A childhood...

That Sofia had never been allowed to witness.

Eleanor poured tea with trembling hands.

"I never lied to him."

"I told him he had another family somewhere."

"I just didn't know who."

Lucas sat quietly.

His eyes never left Alejandro and Sofia.

Finally he asked...

"Are you really my parents?"

Sofia reached into her purse.

She removed the only thing she had kept after the hospital.

A tiny knitted blue baby cap.

"My mother made this for you."

Eleanor slowly disappeared into another room.

She returned carrying an old wooden box.

Inside...

The exact same baby cap.

"I found it wrapped around him the day I brought him home."

Sofia burst into tears.

There could no longer be any doubt.

Lucas slowly stood.

He walked toward Sofia.

Neither spoke.

Neither needed words.

Mother and son embraced for the very first time.

Fifteen years late...

But not too late.

Alejandro wrapped both of them in his arms.

Outside, the ocean waves quietly rolled against the shore...

As though the world itself had been waiting for this reunion.
