## Chapter Thirteen: Celeste’s Last Evidence

The hospital entered lockdown.

Naomi contacted the officer outside Celeste’s room.

No response.

Julian remained with Thomas and Martha while Detective Cruz rushed to St. Catherine’s.

Bianca demanded to go.

“You’re under arrest,” Cruz told her.

“He will use my mother against me.”

“That is why you will remain protected.”

“You protected her before.”

The words were cruel, but true.

Cruz placed Bianca inside an armored vehicle with two federal agents. She would be transported to a secure location while police searched the hospital.

The first officers reached Celeste’s room and found the guard unconscious.

Celeste was gone.

Her IV line had been cut.

A wheelchair sat abandoned inside a service elevator.

Victor had survived the fall.

He was injured, bleeding, and still capable of entering a locked hospital.

The timer on the detonator continued counting down.

Naomi searched the device’s internal memory.

“It isn’t controlling a bomb,” she said.

“What is it controlling?” Julian asked.

“A data release.”

Victor had connected the timer to his archive. When it reached zero, thousands of private files would be sent to newspapers, foreign governments, criminal groups, and public servers.

Some files exposed legitimate crimes.

Others contained fabricated evidence.

Victor intended to destroy every institution involved in the investigation by making truth impossible to separate from lies.

“He’s burning the world behind him,” Martha said.

Julian looked at the timer.

Forty-one minutes.

“Can you stop it?”

“I need the master access phrase.”

“Bianca gave us one.”

“That opened a secondary archive. This is the root server.”

“Who knows the phrase?”

“Victor.”

Thomas stirred on the sofa.

His eyes opened.

“Celeste,” he whispered.

Julian knelt beside him.

“Victor took her.”

Thomas tried to sit up.

“Archive?”

“Yes.”

Thomas looked toward Martha.

“Song.”

“What song?” she asked.

“The music box.”

Bianca’s silver music box played a simple melody. Julian had heard it many times.

Martha began humming.

Thomas shook his head.

“Words.”

“There were no words,” Julian said.

“Celeste wrote them.”

Bianca knew the lyrics.

Cruz called her from the armored vehicle.

“My mother sang them when I was little,” Bianca said. “I thought it was a nursery song.”

“Say them.”

Bianca closed her eyes.

“Grace walks where the silver water ends. Truth waits beneath the cedar tree. No chain can hold the morning. No shadow owns the sea.”

Naomi entered the first letters of each line.

G T N N.

Rejected.

She tried the final words.

ENDS TREE MORNING SEA.

Rejected.

Thomas whispered, “Before Victor.”

Bianca understood.

Her mother had sung a different name before Victor changed it.

“Grace Celeste Hale,” she said.

Everyone looked at Julian.

“Hale?” he asked.

Martha went still.

“Why Hale?”

Thomas closed his eyes.

“Adoption.”

Martha’s face filled with shock.

“Thomas, what did you do?”

Celeste’s father had placed the original shares in his granddaughter’s name. To prevent Victor from controlling them, Thomas secretly completed an emergency legal adoption shortly before Celeste’s crash.

On paper, Bianca had become Thomas and Martha’s daughter.

The adoption was sealed.

Victor never discovered it.

Bianca had not merely been Julian’s fiancée and Celeste’s heir.

Legally, she had been Julian’s sister since childhood.

Bianca heard the revelation over the phone.

She became completely silent.

Julian felt physically sick.

Martha gripped Thomas’s hand.

“You never told me.”

“There wasn’t time.”

Naomi entered the complete legal name.

GRACE CELESTE HALE.

The root archive opened.

The timer stopped with sixteen minutes remaining.

Inside were Victor’s full records and live location data from his medical tracker.

Mercer had implanted the tracker after Victor developed a heart condition.

The signal came from an abandoned chapel outside the city.

Celeste’s family had owned the land generations earlier.

Police surrounded the chapel.

Victor sat near the altar with Celeste beside him.

Blood soaked his trousers. His face had become gray.

Celeste remained conscious.

She looked at him without fear.

“It ended a long time ago,” she said.

Victor held a gun in one hand and a portable drive in the other.

“Nothing ends until I decide.”

“You lost Bianca.”

“She was confused.”

“She saw you.”

“You turned her against me.”

“You did that yourself.”

Victor looked toward the doors as police lights flashed through the stained glass.

“You could have stayed.”

Celeste’s voice remained calm.

“With the man who drugged me? Who struck me? Who threatened our child?”

“I loved you.”

“No. You wanted ownership.”

Victor’s hand shook.

The chapel doors opened.

Julian entered with Detective Cruz.

“Put the gun down.”

Victor laughed weakly.

“You brought the entire family except Bianca.”

“She’s safe.”

“No one near the Hales is safe.”

Celeste looked at Julian.

“The drive.”

Victor tightened his grip around it.

“It contains everything,” she said. “Including the names of people who helped him after Thomas disappeared.”

“We already opened the archive.”

Victor smiled.

“Not the final file.”

“What is in it?”

“The truth about Martha.”

Martha entered behind Julian.

Victor’s smile widened.

“You came.”

“I’m tired of you speaking for me.”

Celeste stared at Martha.

For decades, both women had lived with incomplete versions of the same night.

Martha walked closer.

“I gave Victor the false address,” she said. “Raymond gave him the real route.”

Celeste nodded.

“I know.”

Martha stopped.

“You know?”

“Thomas told me.”

“Then why did you say I left you?”

“Because after Thomas found me, he sent you a message.”

Martha looked at Thomas’s empty wheelchair beside the door.

“I never received it.”

“Mercer claimed he delivered it.”

Victor laughed.

“Mercer delivered it.”

“To whom?” Julian asked.

“Abigail Shaw.”

The board director who had voted against Julian under coercion.

Abigail had been Martha’s closest friend.

Victor continued.

“Abigail burned Thomas’s message.”

“Why?” Martha asked.

“Because her husband was part of the shipping network. Thomas planned to expose him.”

Martha closed her eyes.

Another trusted person.

Another betrayal.

Victor lifted the drive.

“The final file contains every payment Abigail received.”

“Give it to Cruz,” Martha said.

“And watch another friend fall?”

“Yes.”

Victor looked disappointed.

“You have changed.”

“No. I finally stopped confusing silence with protection.”

Celeste reached toward the drive.

Victor struck her hand away.

Julian stepped forward.

Victor pointed the gun at Celeste.

“Stay back.”

His breathing became shallow.

The wound and heart condition were weakening him.

Cruz tried to negotiate.

“Victor, medical help is waiting.”

“I don’t want help.”

“You want an audience.”

He looked at Celeste.

“I want her to admit she destroyed our family.”

Celeste stood slowly from the chair.

“You destroyed it the first time you made me afraid to speak.”

Victor’s gun followed her.

“You would have been nothing without me.”

“I became nothing because of you. And I survived anyway.”

Victor’s finger tightened.

Bianca’s voice came through Julian’s phone.

“Dad.”

Victor froze.

Bianca had called through the police communication system.

“I’m here,” she said.

“Bianca.”

“Let Mom go.”

“She abandoned us.”

“No. You stole her.”

“I protected you.”

“You drugged me.”

“You were difficult.”

“I was a child.”

Victor’s face crumpled.

For the first time, Julian saw the frightened, pathetic man beneath the control.

Bianca continued.

“I spent my life becoming angry enough to please you. I hurt Martha because I wanted you to tell me I had done something right.”

Victor lowered the gun slightly.

“You did what had to be done.”

“No. I committed a crime.”

“She deserved it.”

“No one deserves to beg for their life while someone watches.”

Victor’s hand trembled.

Bianca’s voice broke.

“I won’t become you.”

Celeste stepped away.

Cruz moved forward.

Victor suddenly raised the gun toward Martha.

Thomas’s voice came from the chapel entrance.

“Victor.”

He had insisted on following them with the physician.

Victor turned.

Thomas stood supported between Naomi and the doctor.

“Leave them,” Thomas said.

“You took everything.”

“No. You threw it away.”

Victor fired.

Martha moved in front of Thomas.

The gunshot echoed through the chapel.

Julian caught his mother as she fell.

Naomi and Cruz fired simultaneously.

Victor collapsed beside the altar.

The portable drive slid across the floor.

Celeste picked it up.

Martha’s blood spread across Julian’s hands.

“Mom.”

She looked up at him.

The bullet had entered beneath her ribs.

Her breathing became shallow.

Thomas dropped to his knees beside her.

“Martha.”

She touched his face.

“You came home.”

Paramedics rushed forward.

As they lifted her onto a stretcher, Martha lost consciousness.

Julian followed them toward the doors.

Behind him, Victor remained alive.

Barely.

He looked at Celeste one final time.

“Help me.”

Celeste stood over him.

Then she turned toward the police.

May you like

“He needs a doctor.”

She did not offer her hand.
